Hi, My suggestion is that you take a boat cruise through the bay of islands where there is 144 Islands. This is very beautiful. You have a trip leaving at 1.30pm on the Saturday for three hours Islands Cruising, Dolphin Seeking and Viewing, Hole in the Rock and back home through the Islands OR Sunday 9.00am four hours Island Cruising, Dolphin Seeking and Viewing, Hole in the Rock, Island Stop over and then back home through the Islands. These trip guarantee that you see Dolphins or Whales or you get a lifetime voucher for a free trip. They also give you a free one way ferry ticket to Russell. You could possibly do the morning trip and get off at Russell, have allow around Russell and then come home on the hour with your free ticket. This is $99.00 per person. Possibly also visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds which has Treaty House, Maori House, Canoe, Beach and extensive bush and ground walks. Grounds admission is $25.00 per person. They have guided Tours on the Hour which is $10.00 per person. There is also Cultural Performances at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm which is $10.00 per person. If you do a combination of these it is called an Ultimate Combo and is $40.00 per person. The Treaty Grounds is ope 9.00am till 5.00pm. there are many self driving sights you can do around the Bay of Islands Town areas. I hope this is of help to you. Regards Sue

Hi cynfia,

I think your very short timeframe can be better spent around the Auckland region.

The drive to and from Paihia is 3+ hours each way. It becomes dark about 5:30pm, although you will be spending the final period of daylight on your return on the motorways. Best option is to fly to and from Kerikeri and hire a car at that regional airport.

If you are keen to get out of Auckland, the Matakana coastline is within handy reach of Auckland. Explore this lovely area, with its sandy beaches, cafes, pottery and wineries as well as taking a short cruise across to Kawau Island. From Leigh village, the glass bottom boat tour around Goat Island marine reserve is another wonderful adventure.

Suggest you drive north to Matakohe Museum (north Kaipara harbour) using either the Northern Expressway or via NW motorway & SH16 to Wellsford. Stay overnight in the Leigh - Matakana to explore the surrounding area the following day. From Warkworth township it's a very straightforward journey to Auckland using the motorway (toll fee on the tunnel route).
