Russell ferry

Hello, we are planning a trip to NZ in November and everyone recommended a trip to Russell. We will picking up a rental car in Auckland and were wondering if we should drive direct to Russell or take the main road to Paihia and take the ferry? Will we be saving a lot of driving time? We are also looking at taking the bus day trip to Cape Reinga. Thank you for your help!

Haven't driven direct to Russell but it is very quick and easy to take the ferry from Paihia. Lots of booking agents in Paihia for those day trips too.

Hi,

Are you planning to stay in Russell, of just to spend a few hours looking around the township?

If it's to stay in Russell, take the vehicular ferry across from Opua. If you are staying in/around Paihia, and wish to make a short visit to Russell, take the passenger ferry across.

Hello and thank you for the quick reply!

We were planning on staying in Russell for 2 nights.

Since we are arriving direct from Auckland will the ferry save us

time?

Any suggestions on what to see/ do in Russell and Bay of Islands?

Thanks!

Hi there

To answer your original question - there are 2 ways to get to Russell. One way is straight up the main highway from Auckland and then take the car ferry from Opua. - will take you around 3.5 hours in total to make the trip from Auckland city that way (or 4 hours if you are starting from the airport).

The other way is to head up SH1 initially, but about half an hour after you go through Whangarei, take the turning onto the Old Russell Rd (at Whakapara, signposted to Oakura), this takes you on the old coastal road which is a beautiful drive along unspoilt coastline and past the amazing cafe & gallery at Helena Bay and also past the Russell oyster farm. I highly recommend this route as it is beautiful and you see some very unspoilt and remote areas, but it is very windy in parts and will add at least an hour to the journey time. The road is good and is fully sealed the whole way.

If you leave Auckland in the morning you have plenty of time to take that route.

Hi, If you are planning to stay in Russell you would need to take the Car Ferry at Opua to Russell. This is $11.00 for the car and driver. $1.00 for the Adult passenger 1 way with cash. ($24.00 return for 2 people). To drive the back road to Russell will take over an hour and the road is unsealed in parts and windy. If you are returning south from Russell you could possibly drive the Coast road to Oakura and then come back across to highway 1 south. This would mean only getting a 1 way Car ferry Ticket. Russell is a quaint town which is small and very old. There is walking track from town to the car ferry, Duke of Marlborough Hotel, Museum, Long Beach, Tapeka Point, Pompallier House, Shops, Cafes, Restaurants and the best loo out in the Bay of Islands at Flagstaff Hill. There are many beautiful beaches out the back of Russell.

If you are thinking of taking a Bus to Cape Reinga you would need to be on the passenger Ferry at 7.00am ($12.00 per person return) to the Paihia Waterfront to get on you bus at 7.20am. Your return would be about 6.00pm and you can get the 6.30pm ferry back to Russell. Regards Sue
