How long will it take to get to Billings via Beartooh and Red Lodge from Cody? We will be staying overnight in Cody, with a night in Billings before our flight. Is there a best time of day to drive in that direction?

Thanks

I would leave Cody in early afternoon (after you eat lunch), drive over Chief Joseph Highway and Beartooth Pass taking your time. Stop in Red Lodge and eat an early dinner before going on to Billings for your night.

Make sure you stop at the candy emporium at Red Lodge.

Another place to stop if you have time when you get to Red Lodge is the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary which is a small non-profit sanctuary for wildlife that has been injured or orphaned and can't be returned to the wild.

The afternoon would be a good time to drive over the pass towards Red Lodge as the sun would be mostly overhead or behind you. If I remember correctly, your trip is in early June? If it is, this would also allow the late morning/early afternoon sun melt off anything that is one the road from the night before.

As always, you will need to check the status of the pass the night before and the morning of to make sure it is open.

Thanks Deb. About how much time does it take to get to Red Lodge?

It depends on how many stops you make and how much time you spend at each stop but I would imagine at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Cody over Chief Joseph to the junction with the Beartooth highway. From the junction I would plan on at least 2 hours to get to Red Lodge.
