Secondhand bookstore with good range of US history books

Hello,

I will be in NYC in June and while I'm there I would really like to visit a few bookstores. I would especially like to visit a store with a good range of US history books, particularly 'classic' works, like a nice edition of Bancroft's 'History of the United States'. Ideally, I'm interested in secondhand stores with some character, but I'm open to all kinds of suggestions.

In terms of location, anywhere in Manhattan should be ok for me. Places that are open on Sundays would be great.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

It seems most people recommend New York's The Strand bookshop when answering queries about good secondhand bookstores in the city. However, there are many other independent bookshops (selling new and secondhand books) that are worth checking out if visitors (or locals) have the time.

Try some of these links to get a sense of just what is available...

Mona Molarsky, a writer for the Examiner.Com has written an excellent series of seven articles (at the last count) about bookshops in New York. Here are links to those articles:

1. Upper West Side community bookstores: http://tinyurl.com/7sndgy

2. Seductive bookstores of the East Village: http://tinyurl.com/bqq6e5

3. Bookstores of the Village and SoHo: http://tinyurl.com/bqq6e5

4. Bookstores of Chelsea: http://tinyurl.com/cjk8er

5. Perusing bookstores of Midtown West: http://tinyurl.com/cwa2l7

6. Favorite Midtown bookstores east of Fifth: http://tinyurl.com/cmgrhe

7. Favorite Upper East Side bookstores: http://tinyurl.com/at8hyy

For a comprehensive list of independent New York bookstores visit the website of the Independent Booksellers of New York City (IBNYC) at http://www.ibnyc.org/

Finally, Biblio.Com has a list of bookstores in the state of New York (including NYC) at this address: http://tinyurl.com/25ddh77

However, you will need to spend time search through the list to pull out those in New York City.

That should be enough to get most book lovers started and salivating at the prospect of spending hours discovering some of the great bookshops in New York City.
