Las Vegas to Cedar City - Nighttime Driving

I know in remote areas to avoid driving in the dark, however, I am just wondering how difficult it is to drive the stretch between Las Vegas, NV and Cedar City, UT at night.

My trip with be the first week of October, the sun will be setting around 7pm. I will be making the drive from Los Angeles, CA, leaving around 4pm. That will get me to Las Vegas, NV before the sun sets, but if I continue to drive to Cedar City, it will be after dark. Is it strongly advised against to drive the stretch between Las Vegas, NV and Cedar City, UT after dark?

Any assistance/advice you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Vegas to Cedar is city fine to drive at night - you'll be on I-15 the whole way.

Not difficult at all - I've driven it in the dark many times. You'll want to pay attention going through the Virgin River Gorge, but otherwise the boredom is what might get to you. Coffee, fresh air, and sometime to talk with!

***Hopefully this won't be on a Friday?

Connie B, brian_c_pg, thanks for your input!

JenAzz, thanks for your input! The drive will be on a Friday night. Other than the traffic to Vegas from Los Angeles, is there something I should be worried about for driving on Friday?

If you leave at 4 on a Friday, I highly doubt you get to Vegas before the sun sets at 7.

Don't forget, you also lose an hour entering UT.

Hopefully your return trip is not on a Sunday.

Yep. Driving from LA to Las Vegas on a Friday is going to take you much longer than 4 hours. It's another 4 hours from Vegas to Cedar City. You might want to consider stopping for the night in Vegas and then getting an early start the next morning for Cedar City. The drive through the Virgin River Gorge is stunning. It would be a shame to miss it. Boredom and drowsy driving can also be a factor.

Dez40, Connie B, thank you very much for your advice. I may rethink just stopping in Vegas for the night. Your advice is very much appreciated!

A middle ground would be to stop in Mesquite for the night. That gets you a bit further down the road than Vegas.

Room rates in Vegas can easily double or triple on Friday and Saturday.

Like Brian said, maybe shoot for Mesquite. It's not a whole lot further.

Then you can see the Virgin River Gorge in daylight the next morning.

Any way you can leave earlier than 4pm? I work out in the IE, near the 15/10 & 15/60. By noon on Friday the northbound is pretty slow; by 5pm it's solid. I doubt you'll get to Vegas before 9pm. I'd probably still press on to Cedar City, just because I'd rather get it over and done with than face more of the driving the next morning.

Although - why Cedar City? Maybe an interim stop would make more sense, depending on your final plans.
