how is the driving in July
Is it better to drive from Las Vegas?
SLC to Cedar City is about 3.5 hours...all freeway, with the speed limit 80 mph for the majority of it. Easy drive. Las Vegas to Cedar City is about 4 hours...all freeway. However there is a section of freeway between Vegas and St. George that is under construction. There have been intermittent delays of up to an hour. Otherwise, it's an easy drive as well.Edited: 18 January 2016, 01:54
Its about 3 hours from Las Vegas to Cedar City at most. Its about 4 hours from Salt Lake City to Cedar City. I would pick the Las Vegas route as its a little more interesting Imo, and you can easily detour around the Gorge Construction by going the back way through Ivins taking highway 91 beaver dam exit which is also a pretty drive, and which will only add about 10 min.
I easily do SLC to Cedar City in 3.5 hours and I come from downtown SLC, averaging 80 to 85 mph. The Vegas way is more scenic thru the Virgin River gorge. But if you get stuck in the construction, no fun.
Its an easy detour that goes around the Construction in the Gorge, so their is no real issue that way that I can see, and its a prettier drive with that detour as well.
So you can see that there are two opinions about the route. Both are easy. One a little more scenic. Not a huge difference in time. If you are looking at flights to SLC or Vegas, then pick the one with the best price, including car rental.
This was a fascinating dialogue!
