April Vacation

We are flying into Las Vegas, April 2017 for 4 days, and then taking a side trip for an additional 4 days. We will be renting a car and thought about spending our additional 4 days in Cedar City, Utah. My questions are, typically what is the weather like in April? Are there enough things to do for 4 days in Cedar City? We enjoy hiking and sightseeing. What are the must sees while in Cedar City area?

Is it your intent to hike/visit some of the national parks in the area? Zion? Bryce? If you so, you need to stay at the parks. Cedar City isn't a good base for visiting those places. It's on the other side of the mountain range from Zion and Bryce. You'll spend too much time commuting, Suggest 2 to 3 days at Zion. 1 to 2 days at Bryce.

Curious why Cedar City? There are a ton of other places like Zion/Springdale or even St. George that would have more things to do if you enjoy hiking and sightseeing. Four days in Cedar City seems like a long time to me.

Cedar Breaks is fairly close, but in April might still be under snow. It's at an elevation of 10,000 feet.

We have visited Bryce, Zion and St. George before, loved it and we may do that again this year, just wanted to see what else Utah has to offer. I did wonder about the weather, but coming from Michigan in April, the cold and snow doesn't scare us.

Cedar City is a small college town right on the freeway. I can't imagine basing there for 4 days vacation time. You'd be doing a lot of driving to get to any hiking. As mentioned, Cedar Breaks isn't too far, but could be buried in snow. Consider going back to Bryce. Drive from Bryce to Torrey U T (Capitol Reef NP) via the famous scenic byway highway 12. Among the points of interest along highway 12 are Calf Creek Falls and the Burr Trail.

that sounds wonderful Connie. Do you know approximately how long of a drive that would be from Bryce? I love your state. Thank you

The drive on highway 12 between Bryce and Torrey can take most of the day. You can hike to Calf Creek Falls which can take several hours and drive part of the Burr Trail. Lunch at Hells Backbone Grill in Boulder would be nice stop. There are also several scenic overlooks enroute.

what's the best month to vacation....April or June? May is out of the question for us. Don't mind sweatshirts/jackets but prefer not to be there in freezing temps nor 90s...

ec1234 - based on your other post about a week in Utah and taking in to account the places you want to visit and you want to avoid heat, I would say that for you it would be April. That said, you can encounter cold/possible winter conditions at higher elevation parks like the Grand Canyon and Bryce. In April, you'd probably need a sweatshirt of jacket and maybe gloves/hat for early morning/evening. In Zion, you can have very pleasant day time (short sleeve weather). Also, 90 degrees in this dry climate feels different than 90 degrees in the humid south. It's hot, but not the suffocating hot you get with humidity in the east.
