Is the Beach still nice even though the water is cold?

We are planning a trip to the Oregon Coast in July of this summer. I wold love to go to the beach and stay near Canon Beach, but only if it will be nice for the kids. There will be two 4 year olds, two 3 year olds, and a one year old. Won't the water be too cold for them? Is there a lot of other stuff at the beach to do for kids?

Lots of places to stay along the entire coast, depending on your budget and interests. Same ocean though.

Depends upon what you call "nice"?

What are you looking for? Other than the beach, there is nothing for young children to do in Gearhart or Manzanita.

Gearhart is a nice, mostly residential community (really only one main intersection). But I don't know how well it would work for your family, because, no matter where you'd stay there, it would be a few minute hike over dunes and beach grass to the beach. And when you're hauling everything needed for a day on the beach....

You planning to stay in a hotel/motel or rental house? Might make a difference in where we'd recommend.

We are planning on staying in a rental house. One house for all 11 of us (6 adults and 5 kids). We want to stay close to the beach, but most of what I have found so far is pretty expensive. We would like to stay under $1500 for our lodging. The ones I have found at that rate, though, are already booked for the week we are thinking of coming. If we didn't have to rent a car, then we could afford more on lodging. I started looking at Gearhart b/c there seem to be more options at a lower price. And, it is between Astoria and Cannon Beach; two places we plan on visiting.

We rented a house from family friend a couple of times in Seaside. It was about two blocks to beach and away from noise of Broadway. Seaside first beach resort town in Oregon. Huge beach. Sure there were other rentals nearby. We have never stayed in Cannon Beach. cost is main reason.

Did you find a house in Manzanita that fits you?. Manzanita a great spot, my favorite on north coast, big beach.

We have done a similar thing, 12 people (all ages) in a rental home in Gearhart. The kids were all older than yours, so we could let them head down to the beach on their own though. Gearhart is fine for what it is, but there really isn't anything there except the beach. As thrumylens mentioned, we had to go throug the dunes and grass to get to the beach. The place we stayed was in the Highlands, which is a nice community, but signigicantly over your budget. For the summer months, prices are at a premium, so you may need to adjust either your budget or location.
