Vegetarian Restaurants

Hi I am visiting my son this weekend and he recently has become a vegetarian. Is there any restaurants that you can recommend us trying?

Thank you!

Hi-

I do believe that the only 100% vegetarian restaurant in Madison is: http://www.greenowlcafe.com

However, most places do have vegetarian options, so it kind of depends on what style of food/budget/location you are looking at, so let us know.

For example, I looked up Graze, which is a fairly popular and casual restaurant on Capitol Square, and their menu has several vegetarian options clearly marked: http://www.grazemadison.com/#!menu/c23m1

Wherever you go, I would just make sure to double check that things are truly vegetarian so that you don't get something with a hidden meat ingredient.

I will also throw out that this is the weekend that most of the undergraduates will be moving in to off campus apartments. So just be patient when driving and keep an eye for illegally parked moving trucks in any locale where students might live!

Here is the guide that I give to my new vegetarian students. http://www.vegmadison.com/restaurants.html

If you scroll down, it will give you restaurants that have specialty vegetarian dishes, but that also serve food that is non-vegetarian. That way, if you are with people who want to eat meat, they can.

Green Owl is great, but you may want to be closer to campus or downtown for whatever reason, now you will have that option!

That list is great- but I don't know how often it is updated. If you choose a restaurant on it, I would double check that it is still open. For example, sadly Buraka is closed and has plans to re-open but I haven't seen any news yet.

The good news is that a lot of Madison restaurants have vegetarian options. Harvest is another to consider. http://www.harvest-restaurant.com/menu.php Some of Sardine's offerings look yummy. http://sardinemadison.com/dinner Check out Bluphies as well. http://www.bluephies.com/#menu Even Broach, the Irish Pub on the square has vegetarian options. http://www.brocach.com/menu/ :)

Mediterranean Cafe on State Street... love the food, either to stay or take it to go and sit out on the Terrace at Memorial Union. But you can just walk down State Street, check out the menus outside a restaurant that looks appealing to you, and go for it.

State Street has Himal Chuli; if I remember right - it's been years since I ate there- it is Nepalese food.
