Train attractions in Madison area?

We have a pre-schooler who is crazy about trains. Are there any attractions that feature trains in or near Madison or within an hour's drive? rides? restaurants? museums?

You could go to the Mid Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom which is slightly less than an hour from Madison. They are only open on weekends (for the fall) and there is construction near there. So best to look at their website for detour directions. I have been there once and it is nice.

It is not a train, but Ella's Deli on East Washington is a wonderful place for lunch with kids this age http://www.ellasdeli.com/index.php. I took all my nieces and nephews there and they loved looking at the animations and of course the carousel ride. The food is good too.

for trains here's some options in the realm of possibility:

restaurant, Buffalo Phil's in Wisconsin Dells for train delivered food:

for toddler age especially this train in the Dells is geared for them:

http://dellstrain.com/ part museum too.

Nearby the Rail Dog if it's open (depending on when you go. The beloved owner died (neat guy) this Summer but they try to open it still on occasion but no guarantees:

for a bigger train experience Mid Continent near the Dells in North Freedom as suggested already.

A huge recommend is the Toy Train Barn in Argyle:

Lumberjack Steam Train: http://www.lumberjacksteamtrain.com/ this isn't the Madison area but up north in Laona, I really suggest it for a someday when your preschooler is older. It's worth the trip.
