Not far south of salzburg is Schladming/ Rohrmoos

www.schladming.at

this allows yotu to explore this areas but also the nearby Dachsterin too.

Less convenient from Salzburg closer using Innsbruck or Munich as gareways would be the Zillertal area- this just west of Alpbach.

many villages offering all measures of good walks

www.mayrhofen.at

villages like Ginzling are ideal.

Zell am See and its sister resort Kaprun are in beautiful locations and have excellent communication links, sitting at the junctions of 5 valleys.

Vertical is right (as always!). The small town of Ginzling (near Mayrhofen) is beautiful. We stayed at the delightful Gasthaus alt Ginzling, before and after a 5 day hike to Berliner Hutte and Furtschlaghaus. Ginzling gets you away from the tourist crowds of Mayrhofen and you are really nestled into the alps. Highly recommend it.

LSC

Great that you had a good time in the Ginzling area and fine mountains above.

I can echo the comments made about the Zillertal national park arera and its many walking/hiking opportunities of all types.

Ginzling still retains much ot its character of long ago and has great food including the local trout from the clean , cold waters.

Makes for a great " Walking in Austria " visit.
