Hotel with more local flavor

We will be coming to Maui for the first time in March and staying for 5 nights at the Grand Wailea for a meeting. Our plan is to come 3 days early and stay somewhere else a little less low key and touristy. Would love any suggestions of a more true Hawaiian feeling place to stay on the island. We will have a car and don't need a 4-5 star place just something clean, relaxing and close to good food with a nice view to enjoy sipping a few cocktails.

Aloha,

I'd look at the Napili area. Check out Napili Kai, Napili Shores. I'd also check Kaanapali Beach Hotel if you'd rather be in a hotel. While KBH is on the "main drag" of Kaanapali, the hotel is def much more Hawaiian in style. Staying on the West side for the first three days will also give you a base from which to explore West Maui, Kapalua, Lahaina, etc.
