Hotel in Ka'anapali, Kihei, or Wailea based on excursions

It we want to drive a rental car to see the following locations which area would you stay in Ka'anapali, Kihei, or Wailea? We want to stay on a beautiful beach with swimming available and prefer to have amazing pools with rocks/waterfalls rather than just the standard rectangular pool. We don't care about nightlife/bars but would like to do some occasional siteseeing in town or go out at night for dinner.

We want to see:

1. Road to Hana (how long does it take to get to the beginning of it from each location? Do you tour the North or the South of the island along the road?)

2. Seven Sacred Pools

3. Kapalua to snorkel

4. Crater/Volcano

5. Mama's Fish house

The driving time between the two based on the areas you are visiting are negligible.

As far as a pool with rocks and waterfalls your choices are these:

Hyatt Kaanapali

The Westin Resort and Spa

The Westin Kaanapali Villas (Timeshare/Condo)

Grand Wailea

Sheraton Resort (Rocks but no waterfalls)

The extra driving time to see # 1& 2...,4 & 5 would be about 20 minutes extra each way vs if you started in South Maui.. If you are in south Maui headed to Kapalua you are driving 45 min each way vs 10 if staying in Kaanapali.

So it's a toss up..

PS..FYI correct name, Ohe'o Gluch not 7 sacred..like some travel guides call them.

Thanks for the list of the pools. Could you elaborate on the driving time being negligible? I was wondering if by staying in Ka'anapali I'm going to drive past/thru Kihei or Wailea every time I venture out. What more could you tell me about this? Thanks for your help.

Thank you I think this clears it up for me. I am guessing that fo access the Road to Hana from Ka'anapali you must stay further north than Kihei or Wailea and drive from West Maui towards the North then to the East side where Hana is?

Once you look at a map, you will see how the lay out is!! To do the road to Hana justice, you would be looking at a 12 hr. day. This includes time to stop along the way, visit Oheo Gulch, Hamoa Beach and if you want, hike the Pipiwai Trail. Make sure you go past Oheo Gulch for the best waterfalls, go as far as Lindbergh's grave and then turn around and come back the same way. The major car rental companies contract will prohibit you from traveling any further. Take a look in the Hana forum at the Top Questions. Will give you good insight about what you can see, stop, eat etc. The Hana Hwy actually goes around Haleakala. When you plan either trip, keep the receipt (it costs 10.00 to visit the National Park. The receipt will be good for three days, so you only have to pay once.

When will you visit Maui? How long can you stay? Who is coming (ages, interests)? What is you nightly budget for lodging?

If you stay in Kihei/Wailea(South Maui) instead ot Kaanapali/Lahaina (West Maui) you cut 40 minutes off every trip you make to and from the airport, Haleakala, Road to Hana and Iao Valley. If you stay in Napili/Kapalua (West Maui) that's a greater distance. Some of the difference in travel time is due to distance, some to the additional traffic around Kaanapali/Lahaina, and some to the fact that the only access into West Maui is a two-lane road -- whereas South Maui is served by both two-lane Kihei Road along the coast and four-lane Piilani Highway above the shore.

The only access to Haleakala and Road to Hana is out of Kahului, where the main airport is located. Whether you stay South or West Maui you first have to cross the valley to Kahului to begin these adventures.

If you want to 'do' Road to Hana, allow 12 hours. You start near Kahului and double back to Kahului. The road has many hairpin turns. It can induce car sickness, especially in children. (You can always start and turn around if it's too much.) You could do Haleakala and Iao Valley the same day. Paia and Upcountry are also of interest, and you want to eat dinner or lunch at Mama's. So...that's four or more round trips across the island from wherever you stay. You'll probably also want to drive down the the end of the road beyond Makena in South Maui, and up to Kaplua in West Maui, stoping to see Lahaina Town.

For most visitors, swimming , snorkeling and surfing the ocean are more important that pools, but Hyatt in West Maui and Grand Wailea in South Maui do have pool 'parks'. These are 'kid magnets' and some people NOT traveling with children find the noise annoying. Shops At Wailea is an upscale mall with stores and restaurants, and there are four large hotels in that area -- lots of dining choices. In Kaanapali the mall is Whalers Village. There are bars and restaurants there, and more in nearby Lahaina.

Visitors pick up rental cars at the airport and tour around the island, DIY-style. Cars can be in short supply in very busy seasons, so get yours reserved once you know your dates. There is no need for anything larger than a compact, but many people like Jeeps or convertibles -- just be sure you have enough room for both people and luggage.
