1yr wedding anniversary trip in November Flagstaff worth it?

Hi, any advice appreciated! November 15th (Tuesday) is me and my husbands first year wedding anniversary! We want to do something special and are considering a 2 day 1 night romantic mini trip in Flagstaff. We are considering Flagstaff because we are from Phoenix and don't want to travel far and our honeymoon last year was already in Sedona and we don't want to go again.

I don't know if this is an appropriate time of year for this location though.

We don't ski and aren't looking to spend more than a couple hundred dollars. We really enjoyed Sedona even though we hate the new age stuff because we love nature. I am from upstate NY originally and people say I would enjoy the lush environment and possible snow in Flagstaff, things I miss a lot living in Phoenix. I am hoping for Autumn leaves but it is probably too late. In Sedona we enjoyed nature trails from easy to moderate, indian jewelry shopping, sight seeing and nature, and cabin themed hotels. I think Flagstaff has all these things but is that what they want me to think or are there real tourist attractions?

The hotels don't seem special at all which is disappointing. We stayed at L' Auberge and another cabin themed hotel and loved it. There are cabins available through Air BnB but that seems really awkward right? I have never done those and if they are there at the time were staying that is not romantic at all.

We were considering a local casino as our hotel instead, something new and high end at a good price seems available at Twin Arrows casino. Something better than Super 8 but not overpriced like the badly reviewed Hilton downtown. We like to gamble a little even though they don't have poker or craps.

We were also considering going to the Grand Canyon before going home after staying the night in Flagstaff or a casino.

-So have any of you gone to Flagstaff in November and enjoyed it?

-Is there more to do than skiing this time of year that is worth the trip in Flagstaff?

-Would you recommend Twin Arrows Casino? Their resturaunts?

-Would you go to the Grand Canyon in November? What part?

-Are there things near Flagstaff making the region as a whole worth it since November weather makes Flagstaff less appealing?

-Whats the deal with Air Bnb, would you do a romantic intimate getaway in someones house?

There are vague answers on travel websites to these questions but they are all biased and are trying to get you to go no matter what time of year or how much there is to do! *I would like the opinion of someone who lives in Flagstaff or has visited in Autumn or Winter.*

We only get one first year wedding anniversary and we want to make it special and someones help would mean so much to me before we make a commitment.

Why not get a room at the GCNP? Have dinner at El Tovar.

There are several very nice, actual B&Bs in Flagstaff (as opposed to "AirBnb"); I recommend you stay in one of those instead. Look at www.bedandbreakfast.com or www.bbonline.com. The Innat410 and England House are both very nice; make reservations ASAP, though.

A room at the Grand Canyon and dinner at El Tovar would be over the mentioned budget. And did you know that Twin Arrows casino is not in Flagstaff but about 15 minutes east?

Flagstaff has lots of good hiking and a variety of restaurants to choose from. I'm guessing it will be a bit early for snow and a bit late for the leaves.

These statements don't compute. Are you expecting to find L'Auberge level hotels in Flag for a couple hundred dollars?

We really like Flagstaff: there's good food, craft breweries, some cute shopping, close access to nature and trails. If the weather is clear, a night visit to the Lowell Observatory is quite interesting.

Lodging? We've stayed at several B & B's and loved them. In addition, we've used VRBO/Homeaway: these are for condos, apartments, and cottages/houses. Contact with the owners is usually phone or e-mail. The places you rent are totally private.

As for La Posada in Winslow, it IS lovely and the restaurant is a fun experience. However, there's not much else to do in Winslow. You'd have to travel kind of far to find nature/hiking...at the Painted Desert, for example.

Sorry I'm late to answer. Hopefully not too late.

For clarification, with Airbnb you can rent anything from a stay on a person's couch in their living room to an entire home. When checking option, click "whole house" or something like that when you enter your search criteria. You may find something really darling. Look for something downtown, specifically, if you want the ability to walk around and browse sweet little shops, get a nice meal, etc. And, of course, check reviews.

As for what there is to do in Flagstaff in November, As MarianReader suggested above, it's not likely you'll encounter snow at that point (although it's possible), and you'll probably be too late for fall leaves, but there are other things to do. Just walking around downtown, seeing what's going on at Heritage Square, visiting Lowell Observatory, Walnut Canyon National Monument or a day trip up to Grand Canyon is possible if you dress warmly and it's not snowing. If you don't want to plan out anything too far in advance, pick up a copy of Flagstaff Live!, the local arts & entertainment publication which is available for free in stands around town, or view online: http://azdailysun.com/flaglive/

I assumed that there would be nothing like L Auberge for less than $300 boxing john, just explaining that we stayed at cabin themed hotels in Sedona and liked it.

I would like to thank those who took the time to give insightful helpful advice, I am surprised at the amount of replies I got thank you so much. I will try to find a thread to contribute to like you have for me. I wanted a perfect trip and needed to make sure I didn't pick the wrong one so thank you all so much.

Hearing that the leaves changing would be over from those who had been there has helped me decide to not to go to Flagstaff in November. We like hiking and this is probably the worst time of year to go aesthetically; no foliage, no changing leaves, and no snow. Hearing it from you all and not just an almanac or website has been helpful and we should spend the money on something better for the time of year.

Sands - have you ever been up to Flagstaff? It's still pretty in the fall, even without snow, and there are lots of evergreen trees, so it isn't entirely bare. Even if you don't stay overnight, you could take a day trip up there this fall, just to get a feel for it. We love Flagstaff and go there often. It's a fun, very friendly town.
