The drive is more like 2 hours, one way, taking in to account the traffic. So you'll be spending 4 hours in the car. IMO, that's not worth the drive unless you have some compelling reason to go to Kanab.Edited: 05 June 2016, 02:35
Probably not worth it, too much to do in Zion. One attraction is Coral Pink Sand Dunes S.P., a little outside Kanab. You could visit there and have lunch in Kanab at the Rockin' V, a very good restaurant.
Otherwise, visit the Kolob Terrace or Kolob Canyons units of Zion. Both have higher elevation and would be cooler.
As mentioned above, the drive along SR9 through the east of the park is definitely worth it, but once you're past the park the scenery is relatively blah. Kanab is a nice little town that's worth a stop for lunch if you're driving through on the way to Page for example, but I wouldn't make a special visit as a day trip. Zion is far more stunning and worthy of your time.
Agreeing that leaving Zions and going to Kanab is a poor use of your time. If you're moving on to Page or elsewhere in that direction, then Kanab is a reasonable stop, but I wouldn't call it a destination. And certainly not at the expense of time in Zions.
