Best Plan for 8 Days in Naples/Amalfi

We are a middle aged couple travelling to Italy for the first time. We will be travelling to Italy in May/June and will spend some time in the usual Rome/Tuscany/Venice area and heard many great things about the Naples/Amalfi area and have 8 days to explore there. We were thinking about 2 or 3 days in Naples, a trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, maybe a day trip to Procida, and then basing ourselves in Sorrento and day tripping to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Does this sound OK? Should we spend some and stay at Positano or Amalfi? Is Sorrento too touristy? Is an overnight stay at Ischia or Procida worthwhile? Any advice appreciated.

If you're going to be spending your time going to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, stay in one of them. The back and forth to Sorrento is time consuming and/or expensive. While Sorrento is nice enough, there's nothing there to justify wasting so much time and money going back and forth each day.

Hi

Why Atrani? I don't think Sorrento is too touristy but there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars, and almost everyone speaks English. Procida is small, quiet and almost no one speaks English apart from some waiters. Ischia is much bigger and both are worth day trips on the ferry from Naples but I wouldn't up sticks, pack suitcases and drag them on a ferry for just a night or two. You are spending 2 or 3 nights in Naples anyway and the time will fly.

Sorrento is much closer to Naples than the Amalfi Coast, and you can get to Sorrento via train, coach, ferry or a private driver which will cost about 70 euros. Day trips to the AC can be easily done from Sorrento on the Coast To Coast Coach, Sita Bus or ferry. It's 45 minutes on the bus to Positano and another 45 to Amalfi, and the ferry is quicker.

If you want to stay in Amalfi, or even Atrani, there is a train from Naples to Salerno then ferry to Amalfi. Atrani is a 15 minute walk from Amalfi, and I've done it, but I wouldn't like to do it with luggage.

Some private drivers on the link below and the airport coach to Sorrento.

you might as well stay in Sorrento unless you are going to visit Naples sights. you can easily get to Pompeii, vesuvius, and ischia forn there. There is one driect hydrofoil per day to Ischa from Sorrento and you can taek the hydrofoil to Naples Beverello in between and cath a hydrofoil to Ischia or procida from there

Ischia is very beautfiul and worth an overnight and more. A plus is that it is much less crowded than Sorrento and the Amalfi coasyt. As may turns inot June Sorrento and Amaffi get more and more crowded google amp pf ischis with sights marked

Ischia has great beaches . Buses on ischia are cheap and efficient for getting all over the island

Compared to the Amalfi coast, no Sorrento is not touristy.

I agree with Elstravels. Stay in Positano or Amalfi and take ferries along the water and the bus up to Ravello (easy from Amalfi).

Spend your time in Naples where you'll see plenty of history. It's also easy to day trip to Procida from Naples. I've stayed there overnight and loved its peace and sandy beaches. Some information is here:

The Amalfi Coast has many villages, such as Scala and Cetara, that see very few English speaking tourists. Positano and Amalfi have no businesses set up solely to cater to tourists (e.g. Sorrento's English style pubs).

Spitting your time between Naples and the Amalfi Coast would be lovely. I agree with els, stay in a village on the AC, not Sorrento so you don't waste time commuting.

Very surprisingly you did not mention Capri, definitely it's worth a full day visit at least!
