Ski Stations

Never skied here before but confused about the lift system.. Everyone talks about getting the ski bus to the lift outside town, but nobody mentions the funicular which seems to be in the town itself?.

Is this a viable option to get up the mountain in the morning?

Does anyone have any tips or info on good areas to ski, or availability of mountain restaurants. I will be staying at the Kur Sport Palace hotel, and would welcome any advice on anything, including the rental and storage of equipment..

Many thanks.

Your hotel is ~ 1km from the Schlossalmbahn funicular.

www.gastein.com/de/winter/skiamade_panorama

Bad Hofgastein is part of the huge SKIAMADE www.skiamade.com ski region which includes 5 individual ski areas all on the same pass. If you use the minus but on the zoom on the above link it will show all the ski areas.

The other ski areas are mostly difficult to get to via public transport however there is a special skibus that links Bad Hofgastein with Dorfgastein. Dorfgastein is the "Grossarltal" ski area of skiamade

Your skibus to your hotel is route No. 2

IRAUSEK on the above list also have a depot at the Schlossalmbahn

vielan danke Giftzwerg! That helps immensely, and glad to hear there is an Intersport at the station. Sites you provided are really useful.

Many thanks

The bottom of the lift station in Bad Hofgastein is close to the bus station (for transfer to/from other resorts in the Gastein area) plus the office for one of the ski schools (which we found good) and a ski hire shop. Getting started on the piste could not get much simpler...

We were at Bad Hofgastein today. I can honestly say that if you are a science fiction fan and fancy a trip back in time then go there. The area, although spectacular is served by some archaic uplift, including the ancient mountain railway up from the village with its horrendous queue. Once up to the halfway station you have a choice of a fairly quick cable car (another queue) or a rickety two man chair. You will find more of these once you access the top of the mountain and arrive in the huge bowl, together with a T BAR which you have to take to be able to get over to Bad Gastein. It took us over an hour and a half to get up to the summit. The area needs money spent on it so it can come up to the standard set by resorts such as Flachau, Wagrain and Alpendorf. All three of those leave Bad Hofgastein in the shade, which there is not much of by the way.

Others will love this resort of course but access to the skiing is important and people don't like standing in queues and then being transported on ancient uplift, which of course the main cause of the queues.

Would we go back there? Yes we would but a tactics meeting before the visit to establish a strategy for speedy access would be the order of the day. Breakfast early and get to the lift at 8.15 would seem to be the appropriate course of action.
