I have heard that Amantea is a "ghost town" after August. Is that true? anyone been there in September?
I am interested as well.
HI! I never attended Amantea in September; but as far as I know the Calabria I would say that this is likely. In fact, the seaside tourism in Calabria is a national one (Italian) as a percentage higher than that of other regions, so it suddenly drops at the end of August.
Yes, it's true.
It is most definitely not a ghost town in August. It attracts many Italians, as well as French and North Americans to its beaches. The boardwalk along the shore is always busy with activities and events and there are many shops in the lower town and the upper town has many historic offerings.
The Peperoncino Festival in Diamante (about an hour north of Amantea) was held September 7-11 last year.
The Peperoncino Jazz Festival scheduled concerts in various locations through September 6 last year.
So early September might still OK, although things will be winding down.
Weather will still be warm enough for sunbathing and swimming. Thunderstorm activity picks up in September as the season changes but usually only affects a day or so here and there.
How is the beach there? If you were to send a weekend there in late August or early September what you suggest one do? Grazie.
