Where would be the best town to stay at to organise a day trip to Konglar caves? I am interested in doing it, but my wife would have to stay back as she is extremely claustrophobic and really has no interest.

So I thought I could duck out for a day trip, while she stayed somewhere. (she is happy to do this!)

I would say travel to Khong Lor village that's the best place for a claustrophobic person.

Please travel down from Vientiane or travel up from Pakse to reach Konglor cave.

There are many nice homestays at Khong Lor village. People are lovely and helpful.

Khong Lor village is so calm and freshening.

You can go to the cave while she enjoys the village.

The only notable town nearby is Thakek which is 80km away and hard to make in one day.

The best way is to travel together to Konglor and stay there.

Otherwise, do the Thakkek Loop by bike.

I agree with the other post. Kong Lo Village.

You can go directly there from Vientiane, or you travel there from Thakhek.

The area of the village is actually very nice, so your wife can explore the area while you visit the cave.

Though stay at least one night there, better two to really appreciate this beautiful part of Laos.

Agree Konglor village is best for you both - there are nice guesthouses and one fairly upmarket resort. It doesn't make any sense as a daytrip from Vientiane or Thakhek - It is 180km from Thakhek each way, and longer from Vientiane. You would spend all day driving.

Also the road from Vientiane to Thakhek is full of deep potholes now which makes it take longer than usual. I came back from there last week and now need a full suspension rebuild!
