drive from Sirince to Goreme

Is a two days enough time to drive from Sirince to Goreme? We are thinking of starting from Sirince, staying in Egirdir for the night and then onto Konya and Goreme the following day. Is that a doable drive in two days and have time to enjoy seeing anything along the way or is it MUCH better to take three days and stop over in Konya and then on to Goreme.?

Ideas appreciated...

Yes, 2 days make it an easy drive. Egirdir is a nice stop. I drove from Egirdir to Goreme last October and visited 8 hans along the way, so no problem if you just want to visit the Mevlana Museum in Konya.

2 days is adequate but it is also worth staying overnight in Konya too. This is an ugly city these days but it houses the Mevlana Museum and there are some excellent examples of Selçuklu architecture to see too.Konya to Goreme is roughly 3½ hours so you can see Konya in the morning and continue in the afternoon.

bctravels, You have a lovely travel plan. 2 days is definitely enough fro Sirince to Goreme, with a stopover at Egirdir. At Konya you can visit the Mevlana Museum and see a bit of the city. All you need would be 3-4 hours.

Here's detailed info on renting cars in Turkey: "turkeytravelplanner.com/trans/…index.html". Gasoline is expensive so rent an economy car stingy on gas. Roads are good and well signposted. You need a good road map and the best that is available is "Turkey Euro Map by Geo Center", available from Amazon. Here's a good online map by Turkish Highways Directorate: "kgm.gov.tr/Sayfalar/…Maps.aspx".

good luck,

Dear Enigma, Sarikanarya, David

Thank you very much for your help. Two days it is! Any suggestions for an "off the beaten path" stop or two along the way?

If you have time, similar & unique "not known by everyone else" ideas for around Sirince would be helpful.

Thanks again.....bctravels

Egirdir is a lovely place to stay!

İf you have time, go and visit Sagalassos, not too far from Egirdir high above Aglasun, an old Roman site being excavated. One of the ancient sites on the most stunning locations!

Then on your way to Konya, you can visit the wooden built mosque in Beysehir, worth the visit as well!

And of course not really of the beaten track, but if you come so close to Pamukkale you should see it!

Cheers!

It'll be about 6 hours driving each day, how much time do you think you can allocate to sightseeing? You don't really want to be driving after dark, I think, so you have to take sunset into account, when are you travelling?

If you depart at 9 each morning and aim to arrive at 6 in the evening, then you've got 3 hours available for stops on the way (which is not a lot).

I agree with VR's recommendation of Sagalassos, an hour or so from Egirdir. Worth having that GeoCenter Turkey map, it has all the sights of interest marked. After Egirdir, if you decide to go via Beysehir, instead of Aksehir, there's a nice Hittite monument on the east side of Lake Beysehir - Eflatun Pinari - http://www.hittitemonuments.com/eflatunpinar/
