“ANA and United: a match made in hell (for the traveler)”
Review of ANA (All Nippon Airways)

Reviewed 20 June 2024

DO NOT BOOK ANA FLIGHTS THROUGH UNITED! You are only allowed middle seats! And there is no way to book seats together or other than middle seats, even for a fee. I have booked many trips on United that used partner airlines--Lufthansa, Austrian--so why would I think ANA would be so different? United instructed me to reserve seats on ANA but, of course, that was after I paid for the tickets. I foolishly assumed it was just some glitch since I could see plenty of seats on the ANA flight when I looked on the ANA site. We had V fares, but it's not clear if any fare class on United would allow seat selection. AVOID ANA! They pretended they had no control over this situation (as did United when I called them). I am taking a credit for the tickets and rebooking at a much higher price since it is much closer to departure (end-July). Not a great start to our long awaited vacation in Japan.

Just when I thought I have seen every underhanded trick that the airline industry uses, ANA has come up with a new one. We are a family of four and we booked round trip tickets from Tampa to Tokyo via LAX. We booked the flights via AMEX; the domestic leg was United and ANA was the international leg. We booked our seats on the domestic leg via United, but they informed us that we would have to reserve seats on the LAX-Tokyo leg directly via ANA (which is not unusual). When we went to the ANA website, it was only showing middle seats available (no aisles, no windows), which was dubious because the flight was six months away. So, we called ANA directly and they informed us that THE FARE THAT WE BOOKED VIA UNITED WAS ONLY VALID FOR MIDDLE SEATS. We have travelled to over 40 countries on five continents and have NEVER encountered this trick. We asked how much more it would cost to get out of middle seats, they said it was $900 PER PERSON. Fortunately, we had a long layover in LAX on the way to Tokyo and the gate agent there took pity on us and switched our seats to four in the same row for no charge (the flight was not entirely full). But, that does not change the fact that ANA tried to extort $3,600 from us for seat assignments that should have been free. Avoid this airline at all costs.

The worst airline I have ever flown I can’t even believe that this is considered a star alliance member. They gave me no control to change my tickets in person at the desk, nor via phone through the customer service. Basically, even though the flight was already paid for and I could change it I couldn’t do it through them because it was booked through a different agency like Priceline. I’ve never met an airline in which this is the case. If you’re rendering the service in the US, you are required to facilite the service provided otherwise it is fraud. I ended up waiting on hold for about 45 minutes before reaching a customer service representative and then they told me that they couldn’t do anything for me even after the third-party agency told me to directly call Nippon. This is with a refundable ticket. I was unable to change my flight through Nippon with a refundable ticket. Therefore I decided to just rebook a new flight and I’m still unable to get my refund from Nippon. The flight was $790 to change the flight and I took a total loss of $2500 on the first class ticket. My company will never fly this again and I surely won’t, please be careful you have been warned. My team is prepared to file a class action lawsuit for failing to provide service for my ticket and having the staff tell me they are unable to do anything. Will keep you updated!

The ANA Premium Economy service was excellent, and happy that they included ANA Lounge service in Haneda. Seats and cabin were comfortable enough for the long flight. Kudos to the ground and flight crew!

However, my low rating is directed at the ANA management which apparently thinks the food they serve on this flight is acceptable for the price that they charge. Then they have the audacity to claim "ANA - Inspiration of Japan"!

To be specific, the food was plain awful; I could not eat it, and I eat just about anything they put in front of me.

Over the past 40 years I've flown dozen of times between US and Japan with JAL (Economy, Business, First), China Air (Business, Premium Economy) EVA (Business and Premium Economy), United (Business and Economy) but this was my first time flying ANA. And the ANA on this flight served the worst food I have ever experienced. Their first "meal" was a tuna salad sandwich, encased in a cellophane bag that they tossed to me. The main course had two options and I went for rigatoni and chicken which looked marginally better than the other option which looked to be some kind of a meat dish. After one bite of the bland chicken and the overcooked pasta, I wrapped up the mess and waited for them to take it away.

Compared to other airlines that fly between US and Japan, ANA prices are not cheap, so I expect better than this. After spending four weeks of enjoying fine Japanese food, the ANA food service should be labeled "ANA - Embarrassment of Japan" ANA flight crew and its passengers deserve better.
