We signed up for a promotion that offered a very favorable business class fare. However, our trip was disrupted. Our first leg was Miami-Bogota-Montevideo. This was delayed one day due to a pilot strike, costing us one vacation day. They refused to book us on another airline and offered no compensation.
Our return was supposed to be Santiago-Bogota-Miami with a return to Miami at 16:
30. However, we were notified of a slight time change with a flight from Santiago-Lima-Miami. However, we received no confirmation the night before the flight. Our concierge called the airlines, and they had booked us on a different airline IN ECONOMY in the middle seats of the middle rows. We were finally booked business class on a later Santiago-Bogota-Miami flight that would get us to Miami at 0100 the next day. We had no choice but to accept. We changed our car reservation and booked a hotel in Miami. But when we got to Bogota, we found that the flight was delayed and that we had to take a flight at 0300 that got us to Miami and through customs around 0700. Fortunately, the hotel allowed us to cancel without penalty and the rental car company was equally accommodating.
Total trip delay-one day down to Montevideo and 17 hours back to Miami.
We used Avianca in 2006 and they were excellent. After this experience, never. Caveat emptor.
