“Excellent Long-Haul Experience”
Review of Lufthansa

The indicated flight ended in Frankfurt, where we transferred to Flight 308 to complete our journey to Florence. The Lufthansa Business and First Class lounge in Boston was very nice, and provided an excellent lunch as we awaited our 5:05 PM departure. There was a delay in departure due to a minor issue, but the flight arrived early in Frankfurt. As for nearly all flights to Europe, this one is overnight, arriving at around 7:30 AM local time (scheduled for 8:00 AM). The cabin crew was outstanding: attentive without being intrusive, friendly and promptly responsive to every request or question. The service in business class is individualized to a fault: if carts were used instead of individual trays, dinner would likely proceed more quickly and offer the opportunity for more sleep in the very comfortable seats, which recline to flat.

When we arrived in Frankfurt, there was a very, very long walk needed to reach our transfer gate, which initially we found unpleasant. But after hours of having been seated or sleeping, such an extended period of walking was probably quite healthy.

Our return flight was equally good (flight LH 9439 to Munich and then LH 424 to Boston). It was entirely during daylight, and the slower meal service mentioned above was more pleasant to experience, with plenty of time left for a nice nap to ward off jet lag.

While the service in both segments was great, the whole experience is damaged by one of the worst seats I have had! That's not what one expects from German engineering! The seat is narrow (can't sleep on the back, shoulders don't fit) and very uncomfortable. I liked the food and the attendants were very nice;

Love Lufthansa! I missed connecting flight & even though Lufthansa didn't have to help me, they did!

We purchased the airfare through a travel agency and then upgraded our Economy seating to Economy Plus which provides additional legroom. We were on Airbus 330-300 for both flights across the Atlantic and the $100 per person per flight was well worth the additional legroom. We sat in seats 23A and 23C (there is no 23B) for both flights and the seat in front of us was so far in front that we had to unbuckle our seatbelt in order to reach the magazine pouch on the back of the seat. Our feet did not reach the seat in front. It actually would have been better had the seats been a bit closer. The food is traditional Economy class food for a European airline (a lot of it and reasonably edible). The attendants also did a good job of keeping us hydrated with frequent drink rounds.

Unfortunately Lufthansa no longer allows free seat selection at the time of booking the flight, so we had to get to the airport even earlier than usual. The flight was late to depart and land, the plane was clean, food was reasonably good, in-flight entertainment selection was mediocre and the crew's attitude and attentiveness was good but far from the likes of Singapore Airlines or Thai or most South-East Asian airlines.
