“Polaris class not that great”
Review of United Airlines

Reviewed 20 January 2018 via mobile

United has spent a lot of money to upgrade its Business Class service and probably more to market it but in my opinion it falls short of business class travel at most other airlines.
First the pluses. Flat beds and good food also gel pillows were great. There was a duvet but no one came to help make my bed.
But it is clear from the configuration that United tried to maximize seats rather than aesthetics and comfort. Polaris claims that every seat has direct access to an aisle which is true and also can be convenient but only every other row has access to a window. The overall ambience is dark and claustrophobic. Most airlines when you land or takeoff you can see outside from wherever you might be seated but not so in Polaris. The service was very poor , no drinks were served till almost 3 hours into the flight and although there seemed to be a lot of staff they did not communicate much nor did they ask if we needed anything. This was very much in contrast to the following flight on Lufthansa FRA to BOM especially given the stereotype that Germans are efficient but not very friendly. Ergonomically the seats although laying completely flat were cramped and not comfortable as some of the plugs for electricity and power were behind you and hard to reach
Bathrooms were slightly bigger but were not kept clean by staff The prices on American and United tend to be the highest as they have trapped Star Alliance and One World members but the value ( service + comfort)is in some of the newer airlines

Because this was a domestic flight (even though we were flying from Australia), we were told it was their policy to disallow use of the business lounge. The flight itself was nice, the staff attentive and friendly, seating roomy but without recline. Dinner was included for business class but the food was fairly mediocre.

On US domestic flights, passengers are packed like sardines, although flying from east cost to west coast takes as long as crossing the ocean.
With 100 usd more we obtained more room for our legs, but the seats remained so narrow and uncomfortable.
No screen available for entertainment : you have to use your own cell phone or tablet or portable through the plane’s Bluetooth system.
For the first round of drinks, a (limited) choice was offered. Then, it was water or water.
Days are coming when even seats will not be provided ...
Crew not as smiling as the one of Delta.

We originally had Air Canada booked, but they pulled out of San Juan and put us on their partner airline, United, out of San Juan earlier this month. The plane was 20 minutes late leaving, not bad, but made out connecting flight tighter. They are the only airline we have flown in the past few years that still make you swipe a credit card to pay to watch TV or a movie (Delta and JetBlue do not). Very disappointing. I am not going to pay $8 per person to use their system for a few hours.

The visor on the window beside me was broken and would not go down. When trying hard, it fell off.

JetBlue offered a complimentary meal on a 4 hour flight. United offers you food you can purchase on a 5 hour flight.

Delta gives you a choice of peanuts, pretzels, cookies, or a granola bar. United gives you a single pack of pretzels - no selection at all.

United gives you half a can of pop in a plastic cup and will not refill it. The other airlines at least give you the entire can and even offer you a second one.

Unless the price if very good, we will avoid flying United in the future with many other airlines being far superior.
