Had a wonderful two-night stay. Hotel is easy to reach from the train station as there is a complimentary shuttle that takes visitors to the various ryokans. Kinosaki is not a big town so you could have your luggage sent ahead and walk. Upon our departure we had expected the same shuttle but we were taken by private car.

Public areas are beautiful with lovely gardens, lounge area, small gallery, gift shop. Hotel has umbrellas for guest use. There are two sets of bathouses - one in the original building, near the bar and one in the annex building. Each has separate baths designated for men and women, which switch depending on the time of day so you could try 4 baths just on this property alone. You also have access to the baths at the sister hotel - definitely try those (beautiful indoor and outdoor baths as well as steam room). We also enjoyed the public baths at nearby Goshono-yu and Mandara-yu as well as some of the free public footbaths.

Extraordinary meals were beautifully presented and served in-room by the attendant who set up the table and also prepared the bedding after dinner. Stayed two nights and the meals were different from one night to the next. A printed menu was given for each dinner. Tea is served with the meal and alcoholic drinks are available at extra charge.

We had a spacious tatami room with a view of the smaller garden. Our room must have been located in the annex as it took quite a while to reach it from the front entrance (up and down, twists and turns) but it was nice to feel a little isolated at the same time. Toilet area was in separate stall near the entrance while the sink and shower/bath area were near the back. It was a little odd to have paper towels in the toilet and sink areas instead of towels. Fresh yukata robes were provided each day as well as tabi socks should you wish to wear geta and yukata outside the hotel. The lock-and-key room safe should be modernized to one with a programmable code and perhaps more TV channels could be offered.

It was not our first ryokan/kaiseke experience as we had stayed in another ryokan in Kyoto a few nights before. Once again we were able to experience Japanese hospitality at its finest.

From the moment we arrived at the railway station until we left the hotle we were taken care of! Service is absolutely dead on, completely dedicated and extremely professional. This onsen is by far the best and most agreeable one we ever visited. Rooms are quite large, Japanese style, with a beautiful garden and private bath (room 27). Service and staff completely dedicated, serving an amazing dinner and breakfast directly in the room. The hotel's hot water bath are very nice and clean. We where given a pass in order to visit the other onsens in the area, which was included in the reservation. Bed was prepared for us, for a good night sleep, again, Japanese style. Overall, an expensive experience as one night costs $ 1'000.--, but worth every penny as the dedication, the professionalism and the service are absolutely perfect and customer oriented. An amazing experience we will never forget. Would recommend this place and surely go back.

Room tip: Visit other onsens in the area

We stayed in Kinosaki Onsen for two nights just after golden week in 2018 and on our second night we decided to treat ourselves to a stay at Nishimuraya Honkan. Our expectations for this ryokan was very high as it has been featured in many tv shows and Nishimuraya Honkan didn't disappoint. The room, food, service and ryokan facilities were first class.

We had a standard traditional Japanese room and it was large, and had a great view of the garden. The room smelt of tatami (as a traditional japanese room should) and everything was spotless. There was an ensuite with shower and bath (though it was never used as we used the towns many public onsens and the ryokans own private onsen). There was also a separate toilet with the obligatory bidet/heated seat. in addition to the standard ryokan branded yukatas to wear for onsen hopping, my wife was also given a colourful yukata and obi to wear for dinner and photos. The process of tying the obi with a neat bow was complicated and the staff were only too happy to help my wife with it. One lady was an obi tying expert and did it in 20 seconds!

Dinner was excellent. We had the chef's seasonal kaiseki for dinner which included snow crab, tajima beef and rice cooked in a traditional rice cooker over a flame in room whilst you were eating. It was delicious! The traditional Japanese breakfast was also excellent and tasty.

The ryokan's private onsens were clean and tranquil with both indoor and outdoor pools. Because they were reserved only for the ryokan's guests, it was never crowded. Toiletries and products provided were first class.

Lastly, the service provided by the staff was exceptional. No request was too big or small. Special mention goes to our room attendent Natsumi who exceeded all our expectations. Her use of "keigo" was never ending but she was funny and cheerful and everything was done with a smile. A fine example of Japanese hospitality!

Nishimuraya Honkan is definately one of those places woth splashing out for and we will definately be back on our next trip to Japan.

One of our best memories in Japan.
Everything from the service to the hotel's onsen is great. The room view on the perfect garden is paradise. I can not recommend enough to visit Kinosaki and stay at this great Ryokan.

As a family of five - ranging in age from 9 years to 67 - we can all honestly say that Nishimuraya Honkan and its wonderful staff gave us an unforgettable end to our first visit to Japan.

We had two, wonderfully tranquil rooms overlooking the stunning Japanese gardens and we went for the Kaiseki dining experience; we weren't disappointed. The food was amazing, art on a plate! We had the honour of meeting the chef after we asked for our thanks to be passed on to him (he then came to see us and brought firefly squid sashimi - which was very kind as it was a particularly busy night with diners visiting from the sister hotel nearby).

The hotel onsen were luxurious, quiet and relaxing and we also tried the public baths - for which you get complimentary passes. All of the public baths we went to were beautiful, clean and relatively quiet. It was such a lovely experience.

We were looked after by all the staff but our fondest memories will be of Yu-Ka, who looked after us all and helped us through our dining experiences every day. She was exceptional and we can't thank her enough for the wonderful service we received.

My husband and I also visited the sister hotel for a private onsen experience and spa treatment. They were very kind and organised for the spa to stay open a little late for us.

Kinosaki onsen is the prettiest little place and was a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and Kyoto. The boys loved the old-fashioned games in the town and we enjoyed the quaint shops - especially as you go out in your Yukata and the wooden clogs (very funny).

I highly recommend Nishimuraya for the attentive and respectful staff, the delicious and beautifully presented food and for the stunning surroundings. Wonderful memories were made!

Room tip: Ask for a garden view and get some beautiful photos (each day the ladies are given a summer kimono to wear - it's really fun to dress up!)
