Yamagata itself is a bit run down looking and this hotel fits right in.
I spent my first two nights in Japan here. The air conditioner was disabled so according to the room thermostat it was at 80F the entire stay there. The vents needed to be cleaned as well. The sheets were neat and clean but it was too hot to use any of them. And at the head of the bed, one sad, lonely pillow.
I tried to open the window to let in a breeze but within the first hour I find a rather gross bug in my room and I don't know if it came in through the window or was in the room prior so I shut the window.
I was tired enough to pass out ok but I would say, spend a bit more money elsewhere and don't sleep miserable.
I do feel bad. The breakfast buffet was fantastic. The old ladies running it where on top of it and everything tasted fantastic.

I had a room here for 12 nights in July and August 2015. The service was excellent. Clean and tidy and very effchient. The hotel mana net don't speak much English but they work hard at making themselves understood - rooms cleaned throughly each day

I spent a couple days visiting relatives in Yamagata, and chose this hotel for its proximity to the station. It's a 5 minute walk at most out of the front side of Yamagata Station, a pretty quick walk even in snowy January. There are two convenience stores on the way, as well as many small restaurants and other shops.

At first, I had mistakenly booked a smoking room. The smell in the smoking room was too much to bear. I felt ill after spent 15 minutes laying out my clothes. I was really worried about it, so I asked at the front desk. They moved me to an open non-smoking room, no questions asked, which I really appreciated. The non-smoking room was just fine, a very normal average-sized Japanese single hotel room.

This hotel is close to the station and easy to find. It is reasonably priced, and I found the non-smoking room to be just fine as a solo traveler. If you aren't a dedicated smoker, though, I would NOT take a chance on a smoking room.
