This hotel is two blocks from the Forum and Yamagata Central Public Hall, two of the key venues for the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. The room was fine if nothing special. I had a decent view and the bed was comfy. The shower worked well. I didn't bother with TV or tea-making facilities - it was a place to sleep between films. Wifi worked fine, and is free. I had to borrow a laptop at one point, which was reasonable at 1000 yen a day, but slightly old and would not allow me into gmail.
Breakfast is decent and ample, though the buffet lacked toast. The staff were fine, perfunctory if not exactly friendly, and no one seemed to speak English. To be honest, they seemed a bit wary and nervous of foreigners, which is a bit strange in an establishment called 'international hotel.' That's all fine - I speak Japanese, but they do have some older guys on their staff who insist in trying to speak broken English to you even after you have shown you are fluent in Japanese. All veterans of Japan will know the type...
For novices to Japan in Yamagata for YIDFF then this place will do the trick. I would stay again.More
