This is a beautiful little onsen town, full of ryokans and inns for the onsen enthusiast. It's a good place to spend the night if you are walking the Kumano Kodo or going through the sights of the Kii Peninsula.

This hot spring is 1,800 years old and is UNESCO World Heritage listed ; why would you not want to experience this ?! Couples can book it for a few $ for 30 minutes ; the "tub" itself is actually very small (2 people only just fit) and they really could do better in dressing up the surrounding area (covering up the concrete beams and wires), but it is good fun. You get the Tsuboyu Certificate to confirm that you did it !

You buy a ticket in the nearby kiosk. If necessary, you wait your turn. You can browse a few depictions of this ancient bathhouse on notice boards and then in you go. It's really a quaint bamboo shed erected over a tiny natural hot spring that gurgles up through the rocks. There is room for two people at most. The deeper you stick your toes into the pool, the hotter it becomes. A unique experience on the Kumano Kodo

Wonderful onsen in a small valley surronded by mountain. We stayed in a small minshukus, the food was fantastic and the bath so hot, but wonderful after walking the Kumono Kodo. Beautiful and relaxing.

A hot river runs through this little valley and the roadside is populated with small, family-run guest houses that offer a restful stay, hot tubs and delicious food; all at affordable prices.

The Yunomine Onsen has a history lost in the misty murk of antiquity, but it surely dates to the opening days of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimages more than a thousand years ago. Today, the spa makes a useful base for anyone wanting to walk along the ancient trails. You can access two of them directly from the Onsen area, and others are accessible via bus or car.

The different guest houses can be reserved through the Kumano Tanabe Tourism Bureau web page. They each offer a slightly different price and amenities. When I was there I especially enjoyed the food. The kaiseki dinners are worth almost as much as you pay for your hotel stay. Quite a bargain and an authentic experience of Japan.

Want to learn more? May I recommend "The Nakahechi Trail," a book by Richard O'Hara available on Amazon? It's a well-illustrated, amusing and insightful travel narrative. A perfect cultural guidebook for tourists planning a visit to the Kumano region.
