I stayed here while walking the Kumano Kodo. It was my least favorite out of the four I stayed at. Room was was worn and not as clean as other similar places I stayed at. Dinner was ok, but not nearly as expertly prepared. Not many places to stay, so you have limited choices. Notwithstanding my comments, I heard others d scribe their experiences at other accommodations nearby and this might be the best of the lot.

This a good traditional inn. Great food and location. The outdoor onsen is private and heavenly. My biggest issue with this place is the lack of a private bathroom, If you want to take a shower, the only option is to use the showers in the shared onsen area.
Also the owners dont speak much English, a combination of google translate and sign language got me by.

Yunomine is a beautiful quaint village, this ryokan has its own private outdoor onsen, complete with garden . Also has internal ( male & female ) onsen, and the UNESCO oldest known onsen is a few metres down the road.
Dinner and breakfast are excellent , plenty of variety supplied.
The bedroom is large, but smelled a little musty.

Room Tip: Room on ground floor , close to (shared ) bathroom facilities, still must walk downstairs to onsen.

For a traditional Japanese experience you can't go passed this place. I stayed here for one night whilst doing the Kumano Kodo. It is right next to the path and the Tsbonoyu - the oldest onsen in Japan. The clean neat tatami rooms overlook the hot spring. The owners went out of their way to assist me in planning my walk and helping me make onigiri for the long next day ahead. The food was delicious. The only concern you may have is if you want a private bathroom, but I hope to be able to keep coming back

I stayed here for one night as part of my Kumano Kodo hike (Tikijiri > Nanako Sanso > Hongu/Yunomine and last day Ukegawa to Nachi Falls via Koguchi).

My positives and negatives:
+ For Kumano Kodo hikers: the location is great. Very close to the path (the Hongu-Yunomine path that is; the bathroom area actually looks on to the path). The hotel is very close to the Yunomine Onsen (the UNESCO one) and to the Yunomine bus stop. Beware if you start/end in Hongu: the Hongu-Yunomine trail includes a steep climb, this is quite the hurdle if you need to do this to get to the Ryokan and again the next morning to get back to the trail;
+ The private onsen (hot mineral bath) is heaven. Really. Seriously.
+ Food in the hotel (dinner and breakfast) are great; probably the best ryokan food I had along the Kumano Kodo trail.
+ In contrast to one other reviewer, my experience with the owners is that they were very friendly and helpful. I had a long day of hiking with a full day of rain so I was soaked. They offered to wash my clothes and hang them to dry. Also, breakfast is normally from 07h00, but they offered to have breakfast earlier to make sure I could get an early bus to Ukegawa and finish next day's hike in time.
- The bathroom is fine, but is down the hallway and a staircase outside the hotel (all covered from rain). There is nothing really *wrong* with that, but it is rather suboptimal.
- Bathroom sinks are in the hallway. That was fine for my (I was the only guests early june), but I can imagine this is rather annoying when there are more guests.
+/- The location is amazing, next to the trail, next to the river, overviewing Yunomine Onsen, and that means some of the bedrooms are next to the river. This is great, but also meant the river sounds made me go to the bathroom an extra two times that night :) That is a reasonable price for the view :)
+/- The hotel does not offer lunchboxes. You can't blame them for that, but it means you will have to buy food somewhere else along the trail (best is Hongu, Koguchi is fine as well). Yunomine not so.
