Tagbilaran Airport does not prepare the city dwelling first timer on what awaits on the island of Bohol. Landing on one runway and collecting your luggage on a tiny revolving carousel might not give you positive first impressions but it is certainly one of the tiny concessions you need to make to bring you to the next step of your adventures.
The one hour drive or shorter, to The Ananyana from Tagbilaran Airport whisks you through a myriad of places - the crazy maze of skinny streets that make up Tagbilaran City, then through cement highways driving through not-so-sleepy towns, green rice fields, before you reach Doljo, Panglao Island, off the southwestern coast of Bohol.
An unassuming white gate with a security guard welcomes you through the entryway of The Ananyana Beach Resort. The 10 room beach front property with lovely gardens, designer furnished pavilions, bamboo structures with thatched roofs that make up your guest rooms, are beautiful as they are simple.
It’s a serene and genteel escape that offers leisurely adventures or, is the best place to do absolutely nothing while you thoroughly love doing so. Doing nothing is a luxury these days. Indulge!
For dining recommendations, the resort’s well prepared menu is carefully curated to offer guests what’s available locally from produce, poultry to seafood - there is no 5 star kitchen with matching starched expatriate chef to cater to your every whim, but the warm and happy kitchen staff of The Ananyana, are ready to oblige whatever catches your fancy if its not found in print. Healthy eating is a high consideration here.
The good sized rooms are all with ensuite bathrooms, equipped with the usual creature comforts like wifi but be warned, there is no TV / Cable. But there is WiFi. The Ananyana is nirvana for those escaping from city life motion, traffic and loud ambient noise. It’s wonderful to hear one’s soul and with the sea breezes, it’s a magical personal experience. This is not a place where karaoke is on at 5 pm or muzak running through a cheap, scratchy sound system. But there might be the resident cow with a moo to break the sound of the breaking waves from the beach.
Beach bliss comes with the three-kilometre Doljo Beach. You catch your bare feet on a long stretch of white sandy beach with running breezes creating white tops on the sea. The beach is raw and shallow until you walk out towards the sea as the water gets deeper. There is a lovely pool surrounded by a wooden deck to work out a brilliant tan, stare out at the cloud formations, read a book by or immerse yourself in the pool. Arrange for a masseuse to knead away the city from whence you came, and to relax your senses while the smell of salt air waft by.
The owner, the elegant and soft spoken Ms. Emma, keeps a watchful eye on all of her guests and ensures that everyone’s needs are taken care of with attentive staff when you need them and none if you want to be alone.
For captivating experiences like diving in world class spots around the island of Bohol, swimming in a sardine run, to exploring the island to see the sights of 18th century baroque churches or inland landscapes like the Chocolate Hills, ride towards the deep sea lanes on a large outrigger boat to watch wild dolphin pods at play or to see the tiny Tarsier - all that can be arranged.
Let yourself go, for a truly peaceful getaway with sea, sand, stylishly simple interiors, great food and caring staff, there’s only one place in Bohol to go - to The Ananyana.
