We enjoyed the "Silene at Home" delivery service to our hotel (Borgo Lucignanello). It was spectacular. As we were traveling with our small children, it was such a treat to enjoy amazing food in the convenience of our villa. Chef Roberto sent so many treats--we felt pampered. It was a delicious experience. Thank you!

Here we have a real dichotomy for the owner, Roberto. He is a passionate restaurateur and his dining room, staff and chefs all produce some wonderful fare from mainly local ingredients. We wonder though, whether he is really as passionate about having guests to stay in his hotel? We were on a walking holiday with half board arrangements and had an excellent meal with Roberto looking after us throughout. The rooms we had been booked by the travel company had been given to others, instead we were driven 5kms down the hill to "apartments" in a sculpture park that is managed by Roberto (we understand). These apartments are large but not luxurious by any means and we were totally reliant on Roberto's staff to transport us up and down the hill for dinner and after breakfast in the park cafe, something about which they (and we) had not been briefed.
So, in summary, a great restaurant in the countryside but probably not a hotel to recommend unless Roberto decides to market it as such. Even the hotel sign has gone from outside, so we assume he is concentrating on his restaurant.

After nice aperitifs and tour by a chef in their wonderful vegetable garden, we had a lovely dinner at Il Silene. The menu is high end, including lamb, rabbit, and pigeon, with creative and imaginative offerings, fresh vegetables and herbs from their garden, but the best we had was the pasta. The chef makes what could be ordinary very special. Good advice helped us choose local wines. The tiny petit fours with coffee were beautiful and delicious. The chef was extremely nice, went out of his way to welcome guests and explain dishes. Definitely Troy worth a stop or detour!

It was a complicated fine dining experience to describe at the one Michelin starred Il Silene. Certainly each item on the menu was carefully thought out by the owner/chef Roberto Russo, who was present throughout the meal. (And whose image on the cover of his books strewn throughout the dining room one couldn't help but see) But in a foodie world in which authenticity has become more and more valued, it was more of a mixed experience here: a tour of their vegetable garden and offer of freshly pressed juice with Prosecco by a recently trained sous chef was fun and lively..the vegetables from the garden used in some of the plates were absolutely redolent in flavor..the Zalto wine glasses were a nice touch..the jazz music soundtrack and almost over-attentive service could feel oppressive at times..the Franco-Italian style mains and desserts were either perfectly executed (pigeon, or profiteroles served wrapped in cotton candy strands) yet sometimes not (overly soft pasta, dried out grouper, a bland vegetable-prawn appetizer). So it's hard to give this restaurant an overall rating. Maybe 4.5/5 for the cooking (though you may leave the restaurant hungry at the end if the meal), 4/5 for value, 3/5 for the dealing with the chef's ego. But give this place a try, it's definitely special for the Seggiano area.

In the words of Roberto himself, this is where Il Silene is situated - the end of the world. In the small village of Pescina perched high on the side of Monte Amiata above Seggiano, this is a wonderful restaurant with a difference.

When you are greeted by the chef himself, shown with obvious pride his vegetable garden which provides for the kitchen, have a fresh juice (or prosecco) prepared outside before your meal where the mint is picked straight from the tub opposite (and washed of course) to go in your drink you get a sense of the care and attention Roberto has for his guests. The other staff were equally attentive. There is also the way in which he speaks about food and the food he prepares which is with love and a pleasure in sharing.

So to the food, what a choice. There were tasting menus and the main menu which was our preference. Homemade sourdough bread with Roberto-produced olive oil was lovely. M started with pasta with scampi - they were very large and flavoursome. I had the spinach and ricotta. Beautiful, thing pasta, tasty filling.

For main, beautifully cooked lamb that fell apart as the knife sliced through, M had turbot again beautifully cooked with vegetables. Dessert - even though we were quite full we managed one. Strawberries simply prepared and a chocolate "flan" which was more like a chocolate fondant which when you cut into it oozed chocolate. Lovely.

A nice bottle of Grillo (Sardinian white) washed it all down.

Over all a lovely experience - thank you Roberto and team for taking such good care of us.
