We went here for Sunday lunch. I had been there before and really enjoyed the small tasting menu, with locally foraged products. This time, however, it was a three course lunch they offered: mussels, angel fish and ice cream. The mussels were very nice, the angel fish nothing special and the ice cream very so so. Not a great deal for R295. Main problem was however that when we booked the person who answered the phone hadnt asked us if there were any allergies, preferences, vegetarians, whatever. My partner doesnt eat carbs, so she couldnt eat the potato mash nor the ice cream ( the waitress did offer a glass of wine as a compensation) We both eat fish, but if we would've been allergic or vegans there would've been a huge problem, since there was no alternative. When we paid we told the woman in the shop, who seemed the manager but wasnt keen to hear whether we enjoyed the food or not, about these issues. She blamed it on the person who had answered the phone, who, she said, is new, and should have asked us about allergies, special requests etc and should have sent us an email. That was that, she simply passed the blame onto someone who wasnt there. She did not take any responsibility for a very disappointing experience and a partner who was still hungry when we left...
As with all the other tourist shops in Paternoster, this one is exceptionally expensive. Are they expecting only the very rich to shop there?
Not for me thanks.
Feeling peckish after having returned from a beach-buggy ride, we decided to pop into this authentic little eatery. We sat in the quiet garden with quirky tablecloths and a herb garden in a boat. The waitress was friendly and efficient. The menu isn't very big and changes daily. We opted for a cheese platter and the mussel soup. These turned out to be excellent choices. The cheese platter came with a free glass of wine (red or white) and the mussel soup was served with beautiful homemade bread for dunking. We almost didn't have dessert, but couldn't resist the milktart ice cream, which was absolutely divine! Certainly a place we'd visit again.
Spent a long afternoon at oep ve koep in March 2016 with some friends.
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It should be viewed more as an experience than a lunch per se, as we weren't particularly full after leaving, but were definitely satisfied.
The food is tasty, unique, inventive and freshly locally sourced. We would never have tried half the things on the menu had we not been in the restaurant!
The service was excellent, and I would recommend this bistro to people who are keen to try fresh local produce, presented in a sophisticated and innovative manner.
You wont find tried and tested, standard food options on this menu!
