My parents and I stayed here two nights in the castle suite. It was beautiful! The suite had plenty of space for all of us and a great view of the Rhine. Breakfast was delicious, and the castle's restaurant also provided tasty dinners. I love that though this is a hotel, it feels quaint and family-run still. Everyone who worked at the hotel was also very helpful and friendly. They arranged shuttles and taxis for us and packed us a huge breakfast to take with us the day we left as we left before breakfast time. So thoughtful! This is a great place to have as a home base for traveling the Rhine area.

Absolutely loved staying with these folks and can't wait to return next year with more family in tow. The castle itself has a lot of cool ruins on the grounds with the main part of the castle contains a beautiful restoration, with fantastic relics of glory past on every wall and around every corner (to include the suit of armor that spooked my wife a few times)

To start with, our room had a fantastic view of the Rhine River below and we loved sitting by the window and watching the activities below. The room was comfortable in every way and decorated as one may have imagined from days of old. Getting a bad night's sleep was not an option.

I surprised my wife with the candlelit dinner for 2 and again, a fantastic view from the wonderfully decorated dining room started our evening. The meal was fit for a king (or at least a knight!!) and all courses were delicious. Both our host and hostess were very friendly and helpful and we felt welcome the entire time.

The town of Kamp-Bornhoffen sits about 2 km below and this is a great place to catch a boat for a leisurely cruise along the Rhine (as a help, the KD line has two departures heading to Rudeshiem at 0910 for the modern and 1110 for the paddle wheel, that is used in the high season with a return of 1640 and 1840 respectively)

As a final note, this castle only accepts cash, which is not unusual but something one needs to plan for

Room tip: A must is facing the Rhine River if available

My wife said she would like to stay in a castle so I chose this one because it was easy to get to by public transportation and it seemed to have a medieval look to it. We booked a year in advance. Anita was very helpful in answering questions before and during our visit.
They provide a complementary shuttle to and from the train station. Just before you go, check with the hotel. Their web site says to walk to the Café/Hotel Garn Rheinischer Hof and arrange for the shuttle there. It was closed at the time of our visit, so Anita said to call the hotel when we arrived. I had trouble calling with my phone. There is no public phone at the station. Fortunately a gentleman waiting for a train was able to call information and got a different number for the hotel, which he called for us. From then everything was fine. We were picked up shortly afterward.
The castle is partially restored. The guest rooms are located in a tower on 3 floors. Ours was on the first. In keeping with the old castle concept, there is no elevator. (A staff member offered to help us with our bags.) Also there is no TV, fridge or safe. Internet may be available downstairs but we didn't try it. Fortunately, the old castle concept didn't extend as far as the beds and washrooms. The washroom was modern and very clean, withlots of hot water for the shower. The double bed (two mattresses) was very comfortable. The castle is furnished with both original and replica furnishings, paintings and artifacts.
The room was warm so we kept the window open. Even though our room was very high, we did notice the sound of the trains that passed below us frequently. We did have a room with a view of the beautiful Rhine, and the view was spectacular.
This is a European hotel so the bed only has a very good comforter. It can be hot so you might consider bringing a sheet and maybe a light blanket with you. (There were blankets in the cupboard.) Also, they only provide hair/body wash so you might want to bring shampo and conditioner.
There is not much to do by the castle itself. Parts of the ruins are closed off, probably for safety reasons. There is another open tower we climbed, also for the view. From other parts of the ruin, there are other great views. There is a restaurant and outdoor area for eating and drinking. We noticed some possible hiking trails in the forest nearby, but we didn't try them. We did walk down the road to the nearby Castle Burg Sterrenberg.
We had preordered the 5 course candlelight dinner for 2 (64 Euro). Our table was beside a window with a Rhine view. We were able to purchase wine with the meal and were given a choice of dry, semi-dry or sweet. The wine we chose was very good. The meal itself was excellent: the salad was tomato, cheese, lettuce; the soup beef in broth; the appetizer onion pie; the main course had enough for 4 people. It included two potatoes dishes, vegetable, 2 small sausages, 2 large pork cutlets and 2 good-sized beef steaks, served on a warming pan so we could eat the warm food at our leisure. Dessert was custard, fruit and whipping cream. The service was nicely paced - it took 2 hours to eat.
A good continental breakfast was included. It had cheeses, sliced meats, yogurt, fresh fruit, bread, buns, juice , tea, coffee, etc..
They were able to shutle us down to the station in plenty of time to catch our train.
Payment is cash only - no cards. Anita informed us of this at the time of our booking.
Overall the castle met or exceeded our expectations. We definitely recommend it.

We stayed on 10/5/2018. While there was a slight mixup on the original reservation of 9/25. Anita offered a different night. The candle light dinner for two is wonderful. Bring an appetite though. The room overlooked the Rhein and had spectacular views. We would definitely go back if we have the chance.

What an absolute treat to stay in a medieval castle on top of the mountain above the quaint little town of Kamp-Bornhofen. From the breathtaking views of the Rhine river and the cute set of spiral staircases that take you up to your room are something not to be missed. The welcoming family owners provide great service from the included breakfasts to if you chose the 5 course candlelight dinner. Well worth the stay.
