Expecting an arduous climb to the castle, a local directed me to a long tunnel through the rock at the end of which was a lift! I emerged inside the castle grounds and wasn't quite expecting the fabulous 360 degree view at the top. You can see for miles. There are lots of things to see at the top including a galleries of old photographs showing life in Alicante as it used to be. There is an outdoor café (a lovely place to sit for a while) and on a slightly lower level a restaurant and toilets. Having taken the lazy way up I walked down the hill which brings you out near MARQ -also worth a visit, particularly if you speak Spanish.

We took the lift to the second level and walked the rest. There was so much to see, that it took us about 2 hours to see it all and have a quick coffee. Then we walked down. Tortuous for me (arthritis), but we'll worth the effort for the views.

We visited the castle 3 times during our Trip, walking up from both the beach front and the steps leading to the Park.
great views of the city both early morning and in the evening.
free to enter which was a nice bonus.

This is a must. A free hourly bus can take you up, but it does get crowded. You can even take a leisurly walk to the top. So many places to explore and amazing panoramic view that are worth the climb. So easy to walk down - took us 10 minutes.
