Either you go with your car up to the Avenida das Montanhas and risk some damage to it (if you have a 4x4 car forget what I just said and go on) or you buy a sightseeing tour that take you up there and make the trail with you. Guidance on the trail isn't necessary - you can't miss the way and the path is easy to follow - but for the car sake I took the tour. It isn't a long way either, 2 km at most, but it is a beautiful way in the middle of the forest and the end at the top of a mountain is breathtaking. You command a view over two states, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, in a wonderful succesion of mountains, hills and valleys, mostly covered with forest. It is, as I said, an easy trail, so with very little effort you will be up there. I'm 60 and had no problem at all.
