Lunch was excellent as always but this is really to express my disappointment and astonishment on seeing the Flag of Catelonia flying outside the hotel alongside the Saltire. Why do the hotel owners perform such a cheap and tacky stunt which has no place in the presentation of the public image of the hotel. No matter the political views of the owners, this is a crass and infantile act which will alienate you with many of your customers. Sorry but this has totally spoiled my previous good opinions of the hotel. This act by the owner has created a very perverse and somewhat sinister atmosphere over the hotel. Think about any visitors you may get from Spain who would be very offended to see this flag flying. Please think on this and reconsider this unnecessary act.

(Flag was flying by special request, for arrival of a group of guests)

We thank you for taking the time to post comments on TripAdvisor.

Over many years we have responded with personal consideration to each and every set of guest comments, however reflecting where the world of Hospitality is today, we now feel there is more relevance in providing a general response to each review. As and when blockchain technology allows hotels to verify that all published reviews are fully legitimate, we may be able to justify allocating our own resources again, to responding to individual reviews.

Dear Readers, our gratitude to everyone who has made a positive online contribution. We mention in passing that we are recipients of TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence for all 3 of our review pages, Balbirnie House the hotel, The Orangery (with #BalbirnieDeluxe) and our Balbirnie Bistro. It is lovely to know that the hard work of the 110 individuals who form our brigade, receives recognition which is so consistently great from our customers.

For all daily updates and photographs, competitions and offers, please do head on over and join our Balbirnie House Hotel Facebook page, we have more than 15,000 individuals who now receive Balbirnie’s Daily Updates. This is now very much an accumulating historical archive of information, a celebration of life in and around Balbirnie. Our gratitude as always.

Twitter is now also very much an integral part of what we do, We operate numerous Twitter feeds, the main listing is @BalbirnieHouse - talking daily about what goes into the complexity of our operations, as well as the generalities of how wonderful it is to work within the hotel sector. Please do join us.

Additionally, Balbirnie’s social media also focusses on the ongoing labour of love, a never-ending program of re-investment back into the fabric of the assets, maintaining and improving the future of our Grade A Listed 1777 National Treasure. Over recent years we’ve seen investment annually prioritised and maintained in a range between double and verging quadruple that of industry norms for the hotel sector, which explains why Balbirnie is currently looking at her best in history. Long may that continue, our ability to maintain such expenditure really is the living of a hotelier's dream.

Despite being very busy with a wedding and two separate family celebrations the food and service during our visit could not have been better.
Although we do dine here on ocassion this particular time was free gratis courtesy of the hotel. I won dinner for two at the chefs table as winner of the August prize draw. I'm sure this wasn't the chefs table however what's not to like about a free meal in the Orangery?

We recently stayed in Balbirnie House for two nights while attending a family wedding, and were hugely impressed from start to finish - though we were eventually faced with an equally impressive bill!

Located less than an hour's drive north of Edinburgh Airport, the Balbirnie is easily accessible for visitors coming from further afield and the hotel, a converted Georgian mansion, is set in its own extensive and excellently maintained grounds, giving a wonderful sense of seclusion. The beautiful building and grounds also make it ideal as a single venue wedding option, with several excellent options available for holding the ceremony, photographs and reception onsite without having to leave the hotel grounds.

The large guest rooms feature very comfortable beds and well equipped bathrooms, with tea / coffee-making facilities and complimentary tea cakes that make a nice change from the usual biscuits, and were also very warm, even with the heating turned off. The hotel wifi reception was generally very good, though it should be noted that it's an open network .

All meals at the hotel were excellent, with the huge, largely self-service, breakfast offering being particularly impressive. There is also a very comfortable library bar, featuring an open fire, that stocks a good range of gins, as well as several other public areas for guest to socialise. The wedding reception we attended was held in the ballroom, which has excellent sound-proofing so the even those guests with rooms nearby are guaranteed a quiet night's sleep if they don't make it to the end of the festivities.

The staff were universally well trained and pleasant, though they did appear a little overwhelmed at times - with staff having to shuttle between jobs, rather than being dedicated to a single role.

Overall, Balbirnie House offers a tremendous wedding package and the cost, while eye-wateringly expensive, is (almost!) worth it.
