Loved sitting at the bar here and watching the guys wheel out portion after portion of Tonkatsu. Apparently this place opened in 1939, and it looked like one of the chefs may well have been here since then, but despite his advanced years he masterfully pulled pieces of sizzling crumbed pork from the vats of oil before lovingly slicing them for serving alongside the salad.
I would advise you order the fatty pork. The meat was juicier than the lean, and the pieces of fat themselves just melted in the mouth.
I'm not usually a fan of miso soup, but the pork broth based bowl here was delicious - my favourite in a two week trip to Japan.

...this place epitomizes it! A family-run tonkatsu specialist for 60 years, it's menu basically has only three choices - filet, roast (loin) or kushikatsu (skewers with onion) dinner sets. But just sit at the counter and watch efficiency, teamwork and precision choreography at work, as your dinner (they are only open evenings) goes from raw pork cut to final arrangement with shredded cabbage (refills a must!), rice, pickles and tonjiru soup. The only tonkatsu place I know where the breading/coating forms a delicious shell around the meat and doesn't stick to it!

The food here smelt and looked amazing and I'm sure it tasted fantastic. Was very excited to try it and happy to wait as long as it took. The only problem is that many people who came in after us were seated and fed before - and this is after a good 40 minutes of waiting. Either poor communication after forgetting about us (despite ccommunicating very clearly that we were next and upset about the situation) or a preference to japanese customers resulted in the worst service I've received in my 5th visit to the city.

Every time I visit Tokyo, I always go here. And every time I go, it's always crowded but turnover is very quick. Food is Tonkatsu (pork cutlet), and quality is always good. You can have as many refills on cabbage, rice and tonjiru (pork based soup). They've increased the price due to the increase in sales tax. Watch how they make the Tonkatsu with the batter and transferring from one oil pot to the next to get the pork just right. Watch especially the elder gentleman (father) who does all the slicing. Home style cooking except all you do is eat and enjoy
