Mediocre service and food, sad decor and noisy "private" dining room where we had to speak loudly because of the the neighbours' shouts. In one word, avoid this place.

In a city that prides itself on some of the best eating in the world, I was genuinely surprised by this restaurant. It is a "brand" restaurant that seeks to promote the whisky of the same name as I understand it. It is intended to be "izakaya" style auberge food. Good, solid, comfort cooking to a high standard. The atmosphere is fairly soulless and the service adequate but not as thoughtful as one comes to expect (and this is a very high standard) in Japan. If one was visiting Japan for the first time, this would not be representative of the excellence attainable in many cheaper restaurants. Probably one to miss, in my view.

This restaurant is popular with the U.S. Embassy crowd because its right next door and the prices reflect the clientele. It is good for groups since they will work with you to pre-order, avoiding lengthy delays. The food, however, is average. I had tuna sashimi and it was just ok. Portions are fairly small. I do not recommend this restaurant unless you want a convenient place for a group lunch.

Hibiki is a restaurant conveniently placed near the American embassy in Tokyo (Akasaka).
I wouldn't recommend it for dinner. Despite the upscale deco, service was extremely slow and rarely available to help. Food quality was OK (nothing stellar though). Price for what you get was the real issue. I got for 3,000 Yen a piece of grilled fish no longer than 2". Add 1,400 Yen for enough sashimi to feed a toddler (6 very small pieces), a bowl of basic rice for a premium, a glass of the least expensive sake, and you end up spending over 6,000 Yen per person and still feeling hungry. Frankly, this place is way too expensive for what it delivers, we are nowhere near Michelin star restaurant here. To be avoided.

High end, well prepared, small courses. Don't miss the homemade fresh tofu or the uni wrapped in yuba. If you're getting a beef dish, though, avoid the beef in savory pancake, which was one of the few misses on the menu.
