In the heart of Koenji (IMO the best Tokyo neighbourhood) sits this amazing tempura bar. Great service, great value and most importantly great food! A must try!

My friend in Tokyo recommended this place after our visit to the owl cafe, Cafe Baron, in Koenji. We arrived at about 6.30pm for dinner, but had to queue outside for approximately 20mins, as the place only has counter-seating space for 10-12 diners! Still, as we had heard good things about their food and weren't yet overly hungry, we were happy to chat while we waited. Besides, the smells wafting from the kitchen was very promising indeed.

The place is cozy. VERY cozy. But there was more than ample space for us and our bulky winter coats as we settled on our stools at the tempura bar.

For a non-Japanese reader, the menu was impossible. This wasn't your typical commercial tempura joint where you could get an English menu with pictures. The menu was written in Japanese on small planks and hung up on the walls. My friend is competent at reading kanji, but even he had some difficulty with some of the signs. Fortunately, the staff were wonderfully friendly folk and one of them spoke fluent English! We placed our orders, then sat back to watch the cheerful show behind the counter as they prepared the night's orders.

Tensuke is famous for their egg tempura. Yes, egg tempura: an egg broken into the crackling wok of oil, then skilfully drizzled over with tempura batter in a whirl of showmanship only possible with jolly Japanese chefs! The egg comes out piping hot and covered in a light & crispy tempura nest. Served over a bowl of hot rice, the whites are perfectly set, while the yolk breaks into a molten puddle of creaminess, coating the pearlescent grains underneath. Heaven!

We also ordered a tempura moriawase, and the items came out perfectly fried and piping hot. The ingredients were deliciously fresh. If I remember correctly, the meal may have come up to approx. ¥2000 per person, but it was money very well and moreishly spent.

Being mindful that there was still a long queue outside the door, we finished our food as leisurely-quickly as we could, and left to have coffee elsewhere. It wasn't the easiest of places to find, but I would happily hunt it down again on my next visit to Tokyo!
