Have stayed in various YHA sites around the country and they continue to improve. Grinton Lodge is by far my favourite hostel, with stunning views and comfy beds, i always look forward to my trips up Swaledale. Lots of great walks straight out of the gate, and always somebody to have a friendly chat to in the kitchen, can't wait to get back here and soak up some country air.

Room Tip: Ask for the Arkle Room, fantastic view down the dale

A friend and I recently walked the C2C for Southmead hospital charity. We stayed the night at an intriguing reminder of the priviledged elite’s past wealth represented by this converted hunting lodge. A great YHA with all you you would expect for a walking stop-over; drying room, self-catering facilities, lounge (sofa) area, TV room, dining room and comfy bunk beds.

Two small points to mention are that if you’re doing the C2C then this hostel is up a steep climb at the end of a long day (may put hairs on your chest) and that if you wish to visit the Bridge Inn at the bottom of the hill, it might be a good idea to stop off here before heading up to bed at the hostel. Friendly, helpful staff and a very tasty full English breakfast. Recommended.

A great walk for an amazing charity. Glad that you were able to use this hostel for your coast to coast walk, for sure the hill up to the hostel is steep, yet what great views once you get there and like you mention, a good reason to drop in to the Bridge Inn before the walk up. We certainly are geared up for those who enjoy the outdoors.

We arrived early, knowing check-in was 5PM, we wandered around the building to take a look at the communal areas. The main lounge was cold and every sofa in there needs replacing as all ripped!. However, the kitchen facilities were really great, we had everything we needed. I was apprehensive staying in a pod in February, it was cold outside however on arrival the heater had been switched on in the pod so it was a nice temperature inside. Friendly staff around, slept fine and ate a nice breakfast in the morning. No phone signal or wifi in the pod.... perfect!

So glad you like the pods, the heating goes a long way to keeping them cosy in the colder periods. Our self catering kitchen facilities are great for sure, the breakfast also helps fill any gaps and prepares you for a day in the great outdoors. The chairs are something we are looking at yet being a charity we do like to think how any capital is best spent towards our charitable objectives.

Thank you for your feedback

We booked the double room here and had a great weekend. Through a combination of a YHA offer and the member's discount we paid £33 for a double room with a spacious bathroom including roll top bath - excellent value!
There are plenty of walking routes on your doorstep on the moors and Grinton, Reeth and walks along the river are within 1-2 miles. We made breakfast and lunch at the hostel and there are a handful of pubs and cafes between the villages if you want to eat out.

Room Tip: The double room in the tower has great views over the valley

Glad you had such a great experience, the double room is fabulous to relax and unwind, especially with the roll top bath.

The walks and cycling around the area are more than enough to satisfy those who like the outdoor life.

Me and my fiancé booked this as a random find but it was the best random find. We stayed one night in one of the cabins. The double futon was extremely comfy and the cabin comes with electric and a small fan heater so we were never cold. The area is beautiful the scenery is so picturesque. We had breakfast in the restaurant which was delicious the sausage very tasty and thick cut bacon. All in all we would definitely recommend staying here to anyone who loves the great outdoors and abit of fresh air. We will be coming back next month for a longer spell

Its great to read that you and your fiancé enjoyed your stay in our pods. The location of our hostel is ideal for those who like the outdoor life, great walks, good places to cycle and lovely towns and villages to visit, with some beautiful scenery. Breakfasts, yum, I am rather partial to them myself, glad you enjoyed. We look forward to welcoming you back. Thank you for your review Mikala.
