Stayed here with a group of nine of us for a one night stay on a Friday and really enjoyed it. The weather was terrible which was a shame as I suspect on a summer day it's quite nice to have a drink outside in the patio area, but having a drink and meal in the bar or restaurant area with the log fire roaring away in the ancient hearth, surrounded by historic paintings, suits of armour and exposed beams with timbers that have been there for several centuries was just as good. Decent pub prices as well, rather than 'hotel' rip-off prices for beer (good selection) and a rack of gins to choose from.

You have to accept that it is a very ancient building. If you want modern, clean lines, box room architecture then you're not going to get it from a Grade 2 Listed building that still has many of it's original features such as the staircase, the stone windows, oak panelling and flagstone floors. Yes the floor boards squeak and the rooms are a little dark, but the place is packed full of character and I think we all had a good night's sleep (which is what we were paying for), so the beds must be good enough and the heating was efficient. Breakfast was good and staff were attentive. Our evening meal was pretty good too.

Not the sort of place that I would normally have opted to stay at in truth, but I'm glad that we did and would probably stay again if we're down in Brixham next year. If you want bland and safe the Premier Inn is just 2 miles down the road.... but I'll be at the bar in Churston Manor!

We stayed for 1 night - glad really as like my title, it was just ok here. Rooms are average and not worth the price wewere charged in my eyes. Floors uneven (not a major problem as its an old building), beds very squeaky when moving around. Curtains didnt fit the whole window, (I hate sleeping in rooms with curtains that let light in.) - so we used all the towels to hang and block out the light. The windows didnt shut properly either (again due to old style of building) but this wasnt great given how cold its been & including noise from people coming back late.
We were glad to be going out as the noise presumably from the bar, was very loud and not great if wed planned to stay in and chill out.
I used the bath and it was lovely - however no bubble bath which would be a nice added extra. When id finished in the bath,i let the plug out and the water came up through the shower tray, and had the most god almighty smell. It was horrendous.
The breakfast in the morning was very basic. Not much to choose from if you didnt want cooked food. We had an all day breakfast, which again was 'ok'. We were sat in the breakfast room, and there was a drainage bit in the floor, and the hideous smell from our bedroom was then presented at breakfast. Not nice when you are eating.
Its a lovely building and there is so much room for potential. It was just ok, and I wouldnt recommend a stay longer than 1 night - its ok for a stop over.

Stayed: February 2018

We had a really nice meal in the restaurant on Valentine's evening. Of course the hotel has a lovely ambience anyway, and the meal we had which was a special menu choice for that evening was very nice. There were enough staff on duty and were very pleasant.
A really nice evening.

This place used to do amazing food, with exceptional service, however in the last year it has changed. When we used to dine you'd get a complimentary tasting course from the chef; the menu was vast and had ingredients on that you had never heard of.

We visited again this weekend (after hearing it had lost its sparkle) and were met with young inexperienced staff and a very simple menu. Whilst the food was OK it is something you could get in any pub; Churston used to be in a different league.

The peppercorn sauce was watery and lacked flavour, and the chips were more deep fried crisps than the triple cooked goose fat jenga chips they used to serve. Puddings tasted shop bought.

Unfortunately it has lost its touch for us which is a shame.

We got that wow factor as soon as we walked through the door and are greeted by a suit of armour on the stairs. The building has loads of character and its certainly used to an advantage. Are room was a decent size with modern facilities while still holding onto the aged four poster bed theme, the on suite bathroom was to die for, my wife wanted to take the bath home and took pictures for a possible remodel of our bathroom at home!! We planned on eating out in the evening but ended up having dinner in the main hall. The servers were attentive and helpful and the food that came out was well cooked.
The hotel is literally 10 minutes drive from Brixham harbour and also close to main routes.
This is a definite return for us. Well done all at the hotel.
