We were in Costa Rica for three weeks with the intention of buying property. We started out in the Lake Arenal area and worked our way south and spent four nights at Casa Bella Rita’s. Near the end of our trip we purchased property near Puriscal and were lucky enough to stay another three nights at Casa Bella Rita’s while concluding our business. I cannot speak highly enough of this establishment. It is located in a beautiful setting but is amazingly close to the airport. The house is located close to the secondary highway in a very safe setting. The rooms are beautiful, quiet and spotless. Our hosts, Rita and Steve are the nicest people going, we felt much more like friends as opposed to cliental. They are truly a great couple. We were on the road early each morning but never missed our morning coffee or the fabulous breakfasts. We were fortunate enough to eat two evening meals there as well and the food and company were by far the best of our whirlwind tour. When we were looking for places to eat they were right there with recommendations and directions. We will be making a number of trips to the area in the next three years and we will book far ahead to ensure we return to this home away from home. Thank you Rita and Steve for making our stay in beautiful Costa Rica something to remember …. and to look forward to.

We are familiar visitors to Costa Rica – this would be our 6th trip. We had a different challenge this time, though. My husband would be racing in the staged mountain bike race, La Ruta de los Conquistadores, which starts in Jaco and ends in Limon. Since I would be traveling with him, instead of staying at the designated hotels organized by La Ruta, we wanted to make our own plans to stay at quiet, comfortable inns or B&B’s along the route. We were able to accomplish this with the help of Trip Advisor!

On Day One of La Ruta, the race ended at the Quality Inn in Santa Ana, to the west of San Jose. Through TripAdvisor, and with the help of Google Maps, I found Casa Bella Rita, which was literally only a 5 minute drive (10 with traffic) from the race finish (and the start of Day Two). Distance was important, since the race started at 6:00 AM each day. My only disappointment was that we could only stay for a very short time. Casa Bella Rita is a large home in a residential neighborhood just off the road from Santa Ana to Ciudad Colon. We entered into a lovely garden area, followed by the kitchen and downstairs living area and patio. The patio looks out onto the Virilla River – a breathtaking canyon. We stayed in the Canopy Room on the 3rd floor. The bed was hands down the most comfortable bed I have slept in while traveling anywhere. The room was spacious, with a sofa and table, and a futon on a raised platform in a corner nook (good if you are traveling as a family). Everything about the house was luscious – the bright colors of the main rooms, the eclectic bathroom decorations, the open living spaces available to guests. Rita and Steve made us feel instantly at home. We used her blender to make recovery protein shakes, and for $5.00 a load she did laundry so my husband could wear his favorite bike clothes on Day Two as well. At Rita’s suggestion (really insistence!) she found him a masseur who came to the house at 9:00 at night and gave my husband a fantastic massage, which really helped for the next day’s race. We had a great casado dinner at Meme’s across the main road. Warning to other bikers: the seats are all wooden stools, so if you have posterior pain you may want to go elsewhere! Rita was up at 4:30 in the morning as we were getting ready to leave. After dropping my husband off at the race start, I came back to pack up and leave. I had very little time for breakfast, but Rita made sure I had a delicious bowl of granola with bananas and strawberries, OJ, coffee and some toast to go. Seeing the spread of fruits and eggs on the kitchen island made me jealous that I couldn’t stay longer.

We stayed at Casa Bella Rita purely based on the wonderful things said here on TA and were not disappointed. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our trip. Steve was prompt and pickup from the airport was easy. Just be sure to continue to walk and politely decline the throngs of Costa Rican’s willing to provide a ride/taxi for you. After a short 20-30 minute ride we arrived and Rita was home, gave us a brief tour and showed us to our room. We had purchased some duty free liquor prior to our arrival and she offered to make us some mean margaritas with some of her own limes, paradise! The view of the canyon is amazing, the Mariposa room and it’s bathroom are wonderful (check out the website), and her passion to help the animals of CR is admirable. All of the dogs were well mannered and weren’t bothersome; although if you were a dog person you’d be in heaven! We didn't really have any set plans as we were only there for the night so we headed down the road on their recommendation to the soda MeMe and had our first taste of Tiko food. Later that night Rita and Steve were gracious enough to invite us into town to a local bar where we all had dinner, so fun! Breakfast by Steve was great, basically made to order. It really was a great way to start our trip and we were sad to leave. Steve and Rita are wonderful hosts and have done a lot to make people feel right at home!

What can we say? Steve picked us up from the airport, which was a really nice way to start our vacation. His wife Rita had already planned our transportation from one city to next, before we had arrived and then planned our rafting trip out for the next morning. She really went out of her way to make our stay as easy as possible. Steve really knows how to cook! Our room was very nice and we really ejoyed their parrot Sqeaks, who sat on my shoulder while my girlfriend was sipping on some wine and I was relaxing with a beer. They were great hosts and we would definitely recommend this place to anyone staying in San Jose. We look forward to returning in the future.

We stayed at Casa Bella Rita for one night upon our arrival in San Jose. It was great not to have to worry about getting a taxi. Steve met us at the airport and it was a quick ride to the B & B. Steve and Rita were most helpful with suggestions and directions. We had an extremely comfortable room. It was nice to relax after our flight and have all of our driving questions answered. We had our rental car delivered the next morning so we were able to make a quick start after having a hearty breakfast.

I would definitely recommend this B & B. It's friendly and it feels like home.
