“exquisite food in quirky surroundings”
Review of The Giant Club

The Giant Club
Ranked #5 of 36 Restaurants in Axminster
Price range: US$40 - US$40
Description: A lovely gem of a restaurant with a quirky, bohemian feel serving interesting food and great drinks. All of the meats are locally sourced, fish is from the south coast and the majority of the vegetables are picked on the day. Most of the wines are organic and there is a short but balanced cocktail menu. Lots of cool decor and low lighting give this place a great ambiance.

A 7 course menu which was just the right amount to tease the palate but leave one sate. Fantastic combination of flavours and textures, served with enthusiasm from their newly acquired (?) waitress. Each dish explained well with knowledge - chef also visited each table. Cosy, quirky, ambient & delcious!

We had a most enjoyable evening exploring different genres of cooking. The six course meal provided a leisurely opportunity for catching up with our friends on this gastronomic journey. Each course was prepared from fresh produce and displayed the chefs skill.

Set 6 course meal for £30 per head. Quirky decor. A little bit cold on a stormy night but warmed up when the restaurant filled up.
Very friendly service, giving an explanation of each dish as it arrives.

Absolutely first rate. Quite wonderful experience. Similar but more esoteric than the nearby River Cottage.

Adds to the emerging foodie capital of the UK in the West Dorset/East Devon area.

Highly recommended!

An amazing gem of a place which we are lucky to have in Axminster. Wonderful food, surroundings and service. Fusspots, stay away (although Gideon would oblige I have no doubt) but this is the territory of turn up, eat what you are served and be delighted. How refreshing. Fab cheffing, lovely personal service from Gideon and the serving ladies. Thank you. You deserve much success x

As someone who likes very fine napery, traditional decorations and carpeted dining rooms I knew that I would be enjoying a new experience. The restaurant's decoration and ambience is eccentric and certainly different. As it is compact and bare boarded it can be a little noisy, you will certainly hear your fellow diners. As all tables are served at similar times, eating from a set menu starting at the same time, the six course meal takes about three hours so there can be quite some delays between courses. We began with a steamed goat bun which was delicious, the aubergine and cob nuts that followed was too oily and bland for my taste. The monkfish tikka masala was very good, the pork and hedgehog fungus was dominated by the cream sauce and the fungus was rather lacking in flavour. The damson sorbet that followed was wonderful, bursting with delicious flavour so was the final course, plums, custard and meringue. To sum up it was an interesting evening with some great highlights, not least of which was the most excellent waitress. It is certainly worth going.
