This wetland north of Cairns is a great spot for a peaceful walk or a BBQ, there are toilets n plenty of parking, not well advertised but it is free n very interesting, particularly liked the rain forest boardwalk

It was good to visit late in the day without the fear of being locked in. We walked a couple of trails and saw Orange - footed Scrub Fowl. The signage could be a bit better but all in all a good venue.

Who would have believed this was a commercially exploited site until 20 years ago? The remnant Feather Palms and Paperbark Swamp were recognised as a crucial rescue mission, and the former cane farm and quarry activities ceased, seamlessly rehabilitated, and time (and dedicated effort) have turned this into a watery dreamscape and bird haven. When you walk here, have a picnic, birdwatch and "feel the serenity", you'll be thanking all those involved for this little paradise. We even saw 3 Ulysses butterflies, perhaps they'll survive here unlike their widespread demise elsewhere! Spend an afternoon, or a whole day (bring the Aerogard in case), you'll be glad you took the trouble to find this place -and, like us, you'll want to return

A number of reviewers have pointed out that you need a car to get here, so I would firstly like to suggest that you can use public transport to access Cattana Wetlands if necessary. You can get a bus to the public transport hub of Smithfield Shopping Centre and walk to the wetlands using the end of Cattana Rd, where you will find a gate behind the buildings. It is a walk of just over 1 kilometre, so not ideal, but a possible option for those without a car.

Cattana Wetlands is a great place, but may not be enjoyable for general tourists. There may not be many waterbirds present, or easily viewable without binoculars. However those with a particular interest in wildlife or plantlife will have plenty to see. I visited on a drizzly weekday morning and only saw one other person.
