Our cruise ship anchored at Rangiora. As there wasn't a lot on offer other than sitting under a palm tree we decided to visit the Pearl Farm. Our fears of being pressured into buying pearls turned out to be totally unfounded. The manager was a lovable Frenchmen who explained the workings of the cultured pearl industry in Rangiora and went through the culturing process. It was pleasing to hear that the technicians who implant the bead and mantle are locals trained in Rangiora rather than being hired from Japan or China. Recommend if you are ever in Rangiora.
This pear farm offers free pick up and free tour of their farm. I was lucky I made the early tour and was the only person making that tour.
Saw the production process which was well explained to me.
There was also no pressure to buy which made a pleasant outcome.
Our pension owner suggested the Gauguin pearl farm tour to us because it was fairly quick, free transport to and from the farm and the tour was free of charge.
We really enjoyed this little excursion. Overall a well organised tour of the farm where we learnt lots about the back pearl production process and got to see harvesting first hand.
The boutique had a large range to chose from and could suit everybody's needs/price ranges! Well worth the trip!
Our visit was organised by the cruise ship and was both interesting and worthwhile. The techniques used for culturing pearls were described and demonstrated; you can see why they are expensive as there is a high fail rate. They also sell pearls and it was the best place we came across to buy loose ones. Most places want to sell made up items with a big mark-up but here you can match colour and quality to have items made up to your own design back home. We now have four very nice pearls to have made into a pair of earrings which will be a nice rememberance of our trip.
This farm organized pearl tour and explain you all about the pearl. The boutique has existing jewelry and also sell the pearl to buy and design your own jewelry. There is a lot of choice in all forms and all category (A, B, C).
The tour was very nice. We got to learn about pearl farming, something we have never thought of. Also, the products were nice. We picked our own pearls and made our own pendants, which was cheaper than ready-made products.
