I stayed a few days in San Agustin del Valle Fertil to visit Talampaya and Ishigualasto. Since we already had a booking in another place we did not sleep at Campo base but since they had interesting rates for the tours to the parks we used their tour agency services.

Well let give them this, they know how to do it. We had a nice chat about the tours around a beer that they offered and went to have a few drinks in town afterward when we arrived in the middle of the night.

The tours were pretty good, except for the guide from Talampaya that was probably the worst ever but this has nothing to do with the agency and it is mandatory to use their services when visiting the parc.

We also had an asado with them one night and it was delicious and good value.

What I am absolutly not happy about is that even though we paid a quite large amount of money for the tours (and the asado), when we ask to crash in the common room the last night waiting for our bus they asked us to pay extra money!!! (buses leave in the middle of the night around 2am or something) Just to sit a few hours on the bloody couch!!! It might seem a little detail but some details could make the difference!

If you're going to the Valle Fertil there are lots of options. This place picks you up at the bus station and promises wifi, dorms to yourself (low season), but when you arrive you are shunted into one dorm room even though others are vacant. We asked if it was a non-smoking hostel and were told that there was no smoking in the whole place, even though at that moment one of the staff was smoking across the room. They told him to go out and he did, but the rest of the time all the staff carried on and the whole place was filled with smoke.

Wifi did not work despite promises, nor were there any computers to use. We asked for a small discount because of this, which they agreed to.

Kitchen was used by staff as their own, which is no problem generally. However, there was just 1 cooker with only 3 rings working, and one of the rings was used by staff while 10 guests had only 2 rings between them to cook.

We didn't go on a tour with them because they were too pushy in making the guests sign up before we had even had a chance to take our boots off. We used the Vesa agency in town instead, which was good and friendly.

Saying that, the hostel was generally clean, in dorms and bathrooms.

The staff were friendly, however we felt they were less so once we had gone on a tour with a different agency.

We went to camp base on monday evening, lisented to the tours explanation and let them know whe would like to book both tours. On thuesday they told us be at the hostel at 2 o clock. When we arrived they still had to eat and the tour would left at 4 o clock., Not really a problem, but why to hours in advance? The tour itself was oke.
When we came back we tried to book the tour to talampaya for thursday. We went there wednesday evenig. They had to wake up the guy whe had to book the tour with. Don't know if he was sleepy or did drink to much.but he was acting very confused. We said we wanted to book the 4x4 tour and asked him how late we had to be there. He told us 8 o clock. We said oke, we want to book, he said oke , stood up and dissapeared..Whe tought that he was getting some papers to book the tour. We where waiting and waiting and after 30 minutes whe went looking for him. He was standing in front of the hostel. We asked him: so its oke for tomorrow? Yes yes, you have to be here at 9 o clock. ( first it was 8.30 than 8 and now 9 o clock).
Next mornig we where there at 9 o clock. The guy we booked the tour with was still sleeping. They woke him up. Ah well euuuuh yeahhhhh, we had to tell him again whe wanted to book a tour. Than he told us to come back at 11o clock to go on the tour. And then he told us whe had to come come back at 2.30.....
When whe finally came back at 2.30, he simply told us that there weren't enough people to go on the tour and that whe had to pay for one person more if whe would still like to go. Pfff, that whe didn't do, we just had it and did not feel like paying more just because of his lack in communication skills.
By then it was to late for us to find another solution so whe did not get to Talampaya thanks to the lausy tour management. Thanks a lot. I would recommend to rent your own car. San augustin itself is a great village.

first the good part. a friendly and fun atmosphere. music of your choice played all night.

now the bad part. did not look as though it had been cleaned for many weeks. The used paper bin beside the toilet was left full for days - when we asked for it to be emptied, it was merely thrown out the back door on to a heap of other bin bags. the toilets and showers were filthy. The kitchen was squalid and the fridge was packed full of food that had been there for months. mould everywhere. Bed covers may have been washed once but god knows when, although the sheets were clean.

not advisable.

Campo Base, Valle Le Luna is the most filthy and terribly run hostel I´ve ever stayed in, and the others there said the same! It was only cleaned once in three days, the bathrooms had dirty toilet paper everywhere and the shower was also filthy.

The manager, Sandra, treats it like her home, she sits on the couch all day watching her TV programmes, or has her friends round playing video games. This means that us, the paying guests are all relegated to the kitchen! They then party and drink until 3am in the morning so no one can sleep.

I really REALLY recommend NOT staying here if you can avoid it, ruined a perfectly good trip to Valle de Fertil.
