I live along the esplanade of this beautiful beach. Very rarely crowded. Has a swimming enclosure and life guard for safe swimming. Well patronised by the locals for early morning and evening walks. Good picnic areas.

This is the third of the Cairns "Northern Beaches", about 14 kms from Cairns City, located in a quiet beach-side suburb with the unusual name of Yorkey's Knob (the name by which this little suburb came to be called is a story in itself, but I leave that to you to find out!). It is has a lovely white sandy beach, with a netted enclosed swimming area (to guard against the 'stingers' at certain times of the year), and a professional lifeguard on duty. The beach is located on Sims Esplanade and boasts a great picnic area on the well-manicured lawn at the northern end, clean public toilets and a shelter, ideal for BBQ's and picnics. A great place, safe to bring all the family (including the dog!) for a day at the beach, when you want to get away from it all, but don't want to have to cope with hordes of like-minded beach lovers! Kite surfing is very popular here, for the younger, more energetic set, or for those buiklt more for comfort than speed, just lazing around on the beach and taking long walks along the beach front. There is a convenient kiosk and cafe located across the road at the northern end of Sims Esplanade, too - ideal for buying the kids an ice-cream or a cold soft drink, or getting tucked into a hamburger!

Yes, we've lived at Yorkey's Knob for the past 18 years and consider it to be the best beach near Cairns! It is a wide, long beach running parallel to the esplanade which is thankfully still quite undeveloped. Here you won't encounter hoardes of tourists and traffic jams, but long stretches of unspoilt foreshore with relatively few visitors. Don't expect fancy restaurants or boutiques - you'll be disappointed!
