Had booked a pavilion pool room for 7 days as a treat for the end of our holiday in Thailand. First impressions were good, lovely resort, nice room and a delightful small pool and seating area. First day my husband got many mosquito bites, I myself only a couple , even though we used insect repellent. Day 2 spent most of it at the hospital where my husband had taken a very bad reaction to the bites. Even the doctor was pretty shocked at them. Antibiotics etc in hand returned to the resort.
We were moved to a high level room overlooking the stunning pool in the hope that
there would be less insects.
The hotel paid for the car, hospital bill, credited the difference between the rooms to the new room which was cheaper, no refund in cash and a complimentary bottle of wine.
We preceded to spend the rest of the week covered up in long trousers/long sleeves.
This resort has a huge pest control problem. Having travelled all over Asia have never had any problems. Interesting that that there is citronella oil every where to use - which really did not work either. Never got to use the lovely pool because of all the bites we had. Just ruined our holiday.
I am amazed that more people have not mentioned how bad it is, not only outside but in the restaurants aswell. We had even travelled in the Jungle with elephants in the mountains in the north in shorts and t/shirts and had no bites.
On the plus side , breakfast was great, Joy in the restaurant was a sweetie, staff generally very nice even though sometimes there were some communication problems.
Housekeeping very good.

Dear celia562018,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your last visit. We are sorry to read you seem to have had some personal issues related to mosquito bites (but from there to claim the resort has a “huge pest control problem” is neither accurate nor appropriate). Allow us to suggest you seek further medical guidance to understand why there was an apparent allergic reaction to alleged mosquito bites. We hope you will be able to resolve this matter and that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Amatara Phuket again!

With best wishes & regards

We stayed 5 nights at the Ocean View Pool Villa for our honeymoon. The view, and the villa itself in size and furnishing were amazing. But unfortunately the cleanliness wasn‘t at the same level. Most towels were stainy and in some of them we found hairs. The chairs and sunbeds at the poolterrace looked like they weren‘t cleaned for weeks. Further I found rusty nails under the cushion of the chairs on terrace. This was really dissapointing, but the amazing view, the outstanding friendliness and helpfulness of the whole staff made it all forgotten, so we enjoyed our stay, nevertheless.

My husband and I stayed at the Amatara for part of our honeymoon.
Our room was lovely. Exactly as we imagined. The view was great but obstructed by a few ugly oil tankers - not much the hotel can do about that sadly.

The staff were helpful - but we felt there was not enough staff at some parts of the hotel e.g the Pool.
The spa was lovely but overpriced.
The main restaurant was good with a great selection for breakfast.
Overall the resort could do with some maintenance. But it didn’t stop us having a relaxing time.

I stayed 6 nights with my partner. The over-all impression was good. It has many of the features you’d expect from a 5-star hotel, and some flaws that is worth mentioning and that I would have liked to read before I booked a room.

First of all, I’d say that the location is great, but not for everyone. The hotel is located in a green peninsula quite far away from the busy towns of Phuket. Which means that if you’re after a quiet break, it is very nice. There is not much night life around, which was OK with us. There are a few nice restaurants within walking distance. The hotel consists of a few main buildings with suites, and quite a lot of «pavillions» and pool villas, all scattered around a small hill, which means the terrain is varied, green and steep, which we liked. (Golf cars will drive you all over the place if you don’t like walking.) Some of the rooms and villas are facing the bay between the hotel and the main harbour of Phuket, and some are facing the ocean. Be aware that the hotel is marketing some of the suites as «sea view» although they are facing the bay, which was the case for us. Not ok. That said, the management solved our complaint professionally.

About the bay, and beach: The tide can vary A LOT in Phuket, up to 1,90 meters. So at low tide, we saw that the bay turned into a desert, and the same happened to the little, private beach beneath the hotel: The sea retraced at least 100 meters and for the next hours the beach was useless. But later, at high tide, it was the most idyllic beach ever. I don’t know how the tide affects the other beaches in Phuket, but it is worth checking out if a beach holiday is what you’re after. (One more thing: As mentioned there is a harbour close to the hotel so expect to see some big ships passing by and anchoring a few hundred metres in front of the hotel.)

The hotel has a spa, a nicely equipped gym and three restaurants. One of them has a «health» theme, one is a «grill» with varied food and the biggest one is mostly traditional thai, and it is also where the breakfast is served (pool villa clients has one extra option for breakfast). The quality of the food was overall good, the prices quite high compared to what you get a few hundred metres outside the hotel, and the service was OK. Two issues: One of them is communication. Both at the restaurants and by the pool we encountered misunderstandings and errors due to lack of english skills. Secondly, the staff has just too little attention to details, either if it is at the breakfast or at the pool. High five to Joy at the restaurant who was always friendly, helpful and communicative. The selection at the breakfast buffet could be better. There is egg made to choice and a lot of fresh fruit. And pastries, of course (I never understood how people are able to have that for breakfast).

Our room (pavillion) was clean and the housekeeping very good. We had a small private pool which was clean and nice. Being a tropical garden in itself, the hotel is plagued by mosquitos, which is also why they give you a bottle of repellent on check in. It didn’t always work and our feet were full of bites every morning when we woke up. Nothing much to do about that, I guess.

Pools are nice and there is a classy roof top lounge with great views. The hotel is facing east, so if you are into sunsets, you should rather book a hotel om the west coast.

All in all, a nice hotel, very quiet, well kept buildings, clean, and the beach is either great or terrible.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view room, make sure it is actually sea view and not bay view. If you want to see the sunset, book a bay view room.

We had booked an ocean view room but they put us bay side with nothing to see but trees and part of the bay. We then decided to upgrade to a suite with a pool which was fine cause it was bigger and more spacious the view was better but still of the bay. The only pros I can think of is the staff and the pool we had other then that nothing you would expect from a 5 star. Let's talk cons outdated rooms, the beach was small with maybe 6 chairs on the beach it wasn't a nice beach also you cannot go walk around in the bay it's beautiful down there but the staff said we could not go down there it was "private". The room was damp out sheets and blankets smelled and felt damp even when they changed them daily, we did do the spa which was over priced but was decent. Over all we were expecting a 5 star this is maybe good if your into a yoga retreat or something of the like just wasn't our cup of tea.
