“Tamarind apartment - great accommodation in fantastic location”

This is a lovely apartment at the top of the ridge between the two bays in Castara. Its a minute walk to either beach.
The apartment has a great large deck open to the breezes, with a hammock, table and chairs. The inner room (lounge and kitchen) is also more or less open air too. It has wide shutters above which it is permanently open to the air (and the bats and birds! - there are plugged in bat/bird deterrent machines if this is a worry - we only had one bat and one bird). The bedroom is also airy (although one window opens directly in view of the balcony of Saffron apartment) and the double bed is supplied with a mosquito net.
The kitchen is well equipped with a large fridge/freezer (incuding ice making trays) and a cooker. The cooker is fine but all of the rings are the same size and none turn down to a simmer so any cooking had to be well attended. We cooked in about 6 times in 2 weeks. Plenty of cooking equipment for 2 people. There is a filter coffee machine but filter coffee is hard to come by and expensive - if you want it, take it with you.
The apartment is managed by Carolyn who is very attentive and helpful, and Shelley Ann changes the sheets and towels every 3-4 days. She does general cleaning (sweeping up, bathroom) but is not a daily maid.
The apartment has a good strong wifi service - the local service only went down for part of 1 day in 14.
The village of Castara is great and in our view the best place to stay on the island. See my reviews for Castara Bay; Castara Retreats; The Coffee Shop (Chenos); Cas Creole;

“A Daytime Pleasure ”
Reviewed 5 January 2017 for a stay in January 2017

As an off-the-beaten-path vacation, Castara was great while the sun was shining. Nights were difficult though due to the crowing roosters and barking dogs, which started at 3 AM or 4 AM every night. But after sunrise, beautiful birds perched on the porch railing and in the nearby mango tree. We drank (lots of) coffee on the porch, while looking at Heavenly Bay.

We saw roosters and dogs all over Castara (which isn't much ground to cover), so that complaint shouldn't be held against this property alone.

Castara Cottages was clean, a 3 minute walk to both beaches, and very well serviced. Carolyn, the manager, was always available and responsive, without ever being intrusive. She arranged for us beach towels, a fishing rod and tackle, transfers, and even picked up some groceries before our arrival on Christmas Day when shops were closed.

Accommodations were basic, but we had everything we needed, and it was a great value. If you're a very sound sleeper, go for it!

Lots of positive things to say about Castara itself if you're looking for a simple, non-touristy beach/fishing vacation.

Thank you Andrew. I agree with your comments - but, solved the problem with a pair of good quality ear plugs. They really do work !
As you rightly mentioned - that is village life (for Castara) & most visitors will have the same experience, no matter where they stay. Please visit us again. Ann

“Good self-catering accommodation”

We spent 10 days in Tamarind, the largest of the units. It is spacious and well-equipped for self-catering and the manager, Carolyn, is most helpful. I was pleasantly surprised that our linen and towels were changed twice during our stay. The toilet needs some minor adjustment but works fine if you add water the tank. You an buy basics at a Bingi's which is just around the corner and alcohol can be purchased at Wallace's, across the road. Both these store owners are super friendly. However it is a god idea to stock up at the Penny Savers on the way in from the airport, especially for meats, yogurts, jam, coffee etc. Do make sure you arrive in the daylight. Tackling the road to Castara for the first time at night would be problematic. The beaches, especially the one to the right, are clean and inviting, especially to escape the heat in the afternoon. Tamarind faces west and the afternoons were very hot indeed. Some bamboo screens on the balcony would really help. A real plus is the bird life. The motmots arrived as soon as I put some bread out and we also had tray-blu and palm tanagers, bare-eyed thrush, tropical mockingbirds, shiny cowbirds, assorted doves and pigeons and barred antshrikes. Other birds, including oropendolas and parrots could be seen in the trees.

“Natural and beautiful place to stay in keeping with the village surroundings.”
Reviewed 3 April 2016 for a stay in February 2016

We loved it! We stayed in the lower apartment ad it was perfect. We had been staying in Castara Retreats before this and as soon as we walked in we all said 'well this feels more like home' it was much nicer! We had two teenagers with us who were quite happy in the bunks. Cooked meals, had friends round and loved being in the village and only 2mins walk from the beach. There are the natural noises that come with this eg cockerels crowing and voices with the local church service going on on Sunday, but this just added to the experience of being part of a living community and didn't bother us at all. Carolyn was very helpful and welcoming too. I can't recommend it highly enough and would go back at the drop of a hat!
