The Fortress is very much like many other high end resorts around the world. Beautiful surroundings, gorgeous view of the ocean, (which is not safe for swimming but was okay to paddle in). And overpriced food and spa treatments. But the service was impeccable! Staff made an extra attempt to know and remember you. It was our wedding anniversary and everyone, from the staff who turned the room, to the spa and even the waiting staff at the restaurants came over to wish us and presented us with a cake, which was a lovely touch.
We stayed in the Beach Room, which was on the ground floor, with easy access to the pool and sea. The room was lovely - beautifully furnished, large and spacious and the bedding was extremely comfortable and guests have the option to select the kind of pillows they want.
Mostly the stay was an enjoyable one but I would like to highlight that there are squirrels every where and they tend to jump on tables especially at breakfast time. The fact that guests feed these creatures don't help matters. For guests who would rather not have these creatures around (they make a din in the morning and wake you up!), this can be annoying. So if the resort can do anything about this issue - they should.
Another area I thought they should improve on is the availability of Sri Lankan cuisine on the restaurant and in-room dining menus. There was nothing Sri Lankan on the menu when we wanted to order room service for some snacks. We asked the kitchen if we could have some savoury snacks like Semosas or Vadai but they could only provide sandwiches or pizzas and fries. Even at the restaurants, the Sri Lankan variety was limited. I am speaking for myself of course, but I would think that guests would like more Sri Lankan options on the Menu, and not only on the Sri Lankan Buffet Night (Yes, Wednesdays are Sri Lankan nights and there is a pretty good buffet spread then). So to the management - please add kottu prathas and such to your daily menu and that would be a step in the right direction.
I must commend the chef for the Sea Food Buffet night on Sat though - it was fabulous and highly enjoyable.
For breakfast, one is spoilt for choice. There is a variety of Eastern and Western food and plenty for vegetarians to choose from.
The spa is worth a visit if you have time, and cash to spare. Quality of treatment is satisfactory and the spa itself is pleasant. However, the treatments are a little on the pricey side. I would recommend something from the Ayurvedic line of treatments as its a specialty of the region.
Overall, this is a great property for holiday makers. Relaxing surroundings and charming service personnel and its about 30 mins to Galle Fort. Discerning travellers looking for luxury accomodation will not go wrong with The Fortress.

Room Tip: Beach Rooms on ground level are so great .. you can hear and watch the waves curling in as you rest on the luxurious bed!

A boutique hotel. Staff are charming, rooms clean and comfortable. Restaurant facilities could be better- menus not 5star and wine list limited (ran out of a number of wines during our stay). Pleasant but not stunning and overall slightly disappointing.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of our trip to Sri Lanka. It was a beautiful place to relax and the staff were very helpful and attentive. Our room was first floor ocean facing, it was a great view even though there were a few trees in the way. The room was beautifully decorated and very well equipped, the iPod/Sonos was a nice touch - listening to some chilled out music whilst watching the waves! The fans were a nice change to air con, it was very quiet/well soundproofed and had proper blackout blind so sleep quality was very good.

The sea along this stretch is very rough and you cannot swim in it in front of the hotel. We didn't mind this, there were plenty of loungers around the pool and on the grass but something to keep in mind if you do like to swim in the sea.

It was really convenient to have the spa on site, we both had two massages which were very good. We were able to book these last minute but the beauty treatments seemed to get booked up quite quickly.

We chose a la carte each night, there was a wide choice and everything we had was very tasty, particularly the curry selections. The staff in the restaurant were very helpful and offered advice on the level of spice etc...!

The only issues, which we raised upon checkout, were the birds and squirrels which crawled all over the dining area, eating half-finished food off plates as people went up for more and made it very hard to relax whilst eating as they were crawling around our feet. We have nothing against animals but these have got to the stage where they are becoming pests.

I recommend purchasing the all-inclusive option, we did and it was well worth it. The food was excellent and the staff was friendly, professional, and attentive. After spending several days moving around tea country, it was nice to stay at the Fortress and be taken care of for a couple days. My only regret is not staying an additional day. The spa was nice, but prices were high relative to the rest of the country.

We stayed at The Fortress for two nights as part of our Sri Lankan tour (to go whale watching from Mirissa and to visit Galle) and wish we stayed longer. Our room (we were upgraded to an Ocean Loft) was superb and kept spotlessly clean. The location is breathtaking. There can't be many resorts where you can sit by the infinity pool and watch turtles swimming past in the ocean. The food is excellent and the seafood barbecue is a real treat. The staff are all very friendly and helpful - with a particular mention to Lahiru who made our stay there special. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Sri Lanka whether as part of a tour or a relaxing break by the sea.
